Hayfield High School Band Msg #10...Tag Day #2 Estimates--YES!

Band Booster Family,

Prelude: THANK YOU to ALL of the VOLUNTEERS so far this year because you make me feel proud to be a Band Booster Family member!!!  This morning, I met some new members, & it was a pleasure listening to their stories about how band makes their students happy & how they’re growing as individuals, developing social skills, discipline, & confidence.  If you haven’t been involved yet or haven’t had a chance to sign-up, I’d ask you to sign up for @ least 5 different events this school year for your band kid…they’ll appreciate you for itJ

First of all, again, thanks to Robert Dowell, our treasurer for his work this morning!  He reports the initial estimate total of $2,500 for today’s TAG Day #2.  YES!  CONGRATS!  We easily surpassed our goal of $10,000…with approximately $12,000 and still need to wait for a few months for all of the potential mail-in donations.  It’s such a blessing to see people donating during a downturn in the overall US economy, tough times, loss damage from earthquakes, hurricane, and flash floods, and a myriad of other misfortunes.  We had another great weather day.

-       Thank you to Michelle Booth and Jocelyn Valdez for their continued Tag Day leadership!

-       Thank you to Erin Fitzsimmons for taking much needed pics of our senior students making this year a memorable one!

-       Thank you to the students for walking the pavement again in their uniforms with a sense of pride, spirit, and fun!

-       Thank you to the parents/siblings/relatives/others for their volunteerism!

-       Thankful for living in a community that is willing to give during difficult times.

-       Also, I heard that the Hayfield football team won 29-27 last night…they’re 3-0!

NOTE: I’m going to do something fairly risky & that is to recognize & thank everyone.  However, because of my old age, I’m certain that I’ll probably miss someone.  If I do, please send me an e-mail; so, I can correct my oversight.  Additionally, a (*) next to their names means they volunteered for both Tag Days:

Drivers: Sally Nicely*, Linda Lichtman*, Emma* & Roger* Silverio; Sharon Fussell*, Soliman Valdez*, Kate Tomson & Ronald Schmidt, Scott Holliday, Simon John, Bob Kingsley, and Bettina Dowell

Money counters & other activities: Jocelyn* & Thomas* Valdez, Michelle Booth*, Elsa* & Robert* Palting, Emma* & Roger* Silverio, Allison Andrews*, & Robert Dowell*

Additionally, many of the volunteers did double/triple duty early in the morning putting address labels on the envelopes left over from Tag Day stapler party.

Please e-mail me your thoughts, ideas, inputs, suggestions, & so on in determining what we could do if we were to make Tag Day in future years be only one day instead of two:

-       Extend day from 9 am – 2:30 pm to 9 am – 7:30 pm or something like this

-       Saturday as normal 9 am – 2:30 pm, with the next day Sunday, 2:00 pm – 7:30 pm or something like this

-       Ask for more drivers & groups for just one day

-       Send two drivers & groups to the larger areas & those that historically donate more & one driver & group to the other areas

-       Have co-ed groups rather than all boys or girls groups

Third, for their first competition of the year, we want to have our students look their best with nice, clean uniforms; so, this is what needs to be done:

-       Kids bring home their bibs/pants to be cleaned in the washer/dryer

-       Atsuko has graciously volunteered to lead the effort to collect uniform tops from the Band Room to take to the dry cleaners Tues, 2:30 pm after school; however, we need a couple of parents of a junior, sophomore, or freshman to keep this going for future years…please e-mail me if you can volunteer

Fourth, reminder of this week’s schedule:

September 2011

Tuesday, Sept. 13 , 6pm-8pm, Marching Band Rehearsal
Wednesday, Sept 14, 2:30-4:30pm, Marching Band Rehearsal

Fifth, miscellaneous items:

-       Still looking for a volunteer to organize an UNOs restaurant food fundraiser night for the Marching Band (date/time to be determined) which usually gets about $200…Atsuko Russell has done this before & is willing to help

-       If you take pictures/videos of our band students, I request that you either e-mail them to me or put them on CD/DVD & pass them to my son, Justin Russell; so, I can use them for the slide show during the Marching Band Awards, Wed, 9 Nov

-       Parents of seniors, it’s not too early to be thinking about the 3 pictures (baby pic, kid pic, & senior pic) you want to use for the Final Concert, Wed, 6 Jun 2012

-       Both Dottie Andrews & I have seniors this year & will not be Band Booster Vice Prez or Prez; so, if you’re interested, please send me an e-mail.  This will help the transition & keep the legacy goingJ

Sixth, based on the rest of the week, attached is the most current Excel spreadsheet with volunteers to include those that I’ve noted on Sign-Up Genius.  We still need a few volunteer slots filled.  Please see either Sign-Up Genius (http://signupgenius.com/go/hssband1 ) or the attached Excel spreadsheet.  Hope to see you all @ multiple events to support & cheer on our students.

Finally, our students REALLY NEED YOU!  As most teenagers, they will NEVER admit this.  Your VOLUNTEERISM is ESSENTIAL to THEIR SUCCESS!!!  Additionally, they really do APPRECIATE seeing you @ their various events cheering for them.  I hope to see ALL the parents volunteering @ various events throughout the year: )  If there is ANYTHING I can do or answer, please let me know.  Please keep the following links for future reference:
