HSS Band 2009-10.6 Week ahead: practice; game; orientation

Hi Band Family!
First - thanks to everyone who helped make the pool party on Thursday and the performance and potluck on Friday a success! The food was delicious; the volleyball was energetic; there was plenty of help (gotta love the band students who came over to help unload the cars when they saw us drive up at the pool!); and - most of all - the music was terrific! Hats off to our students and their directors, especially under the changing weather conditions. (FYI - I have some serving spoons and a ziplock container left over; let me know if you're missing anything and I'll get you reunited.)

The week ahead -- according to the HS Bulletins on the band web site (http://www.hayfieldbands.com/):
practice from 5pm-8pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
Home football game on Thursday (Mr. Burke will announce when band students should report to school)
Friday morning the band will play for orientation (Mr. Burke will announce when students should arrive; they'll start playing around 7:30am)

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch with me

Humbly serving our kids,

HSS Band 2009-10.5 Details for pool party

Hi Band Family,

As promised, here are the details for the Pool and Pizza party. (The kids have earned a fun way to cool off after marching under the hot sun this week!)

Thursday, August 27 5pm-8pm at Hayfield Farm Swim Club

Rehearsal will end a little early so students can change and get to the pool at 5pm.
Boosters will provide pizza, drinks, and paper goods.
We ask students to bring a dessert or "side" dish (chips, etc.) to share.
If you're not a member of Hayfield pool, please bring $3 to pay the guest fee (fee applies to non-swimming guests too).

The pool is at the end of Hayfield Road, in the Hayfield Farm community across Telegraph Road from the school. The pool closes at 8pm, so please plan on picking up your student right around 8pm.

HSS Band 2009-10.4 The Week Ahead: Rehearsals, Pool Party, Performance and Potluck

Hi Band Family,
Thanks to all the parents who joined us last week at our first ever Welcome Coffee for band parents. It was great to meet some new faces and re-connect with returning families.

Note - the calendar for the 2009-2010 year is now posted on the Hayfield band web site:
http://www.hayfieldbands.com/ The first home football game is Thursday, September 3!

The week of 8/24-8/28/09:
Marching band Rehearsals from 8am-5pm Monday - Friday

Monday and Tuesday: Dottie Andrews will organize volunteers to measure and assign uniforms to the students from 1pm-5pm in the band room. If you can help, please come by the band room between 1 - 5pm Monday 8/24 and/or Tuesday 8/25.

Thursday: Pizza party at Hayfield Farm Pool 5pm-8pm. (Band rehearsal will finish around 4pm.) The pool is located at the end of Hayfield Rd in the Hayfield Farm community (across Telegraph Road from the high school). More details coming this week. (If you can help with this event, please reply to me -- we'll need someone to purchase drinks and paper goods, and arrange for pizza delivery.)

Friday: Performance and Potluck starting at 6pm. The marching band will perform on the blacktop near the tennis courts at 6pm. We'll follow the performance with a potluck dinner in the HS cafeteria. At the potluck you'll have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer positions, pay for marching shoes, and order a band booster T-shirt (optional). Thanks once again this year to Mary Anne Mulligan for organizing our booster shirts. The t-shirts are $10, and polos are $25 -- please bring money or check made out to Hayfield Band Boosters if you'd like to purchase a shirt. We'll have several shirts available so you can check out the size and style before ordering. Families with last names A-M please bring side dish or dessert; last names N-Z please bring a main dish to share.

Let's hope for good weather for our marchers this week! Mr. Burke reminds the students to wear sunscreen and sneakers, and to bring lunch, water, and a hat to rehearsals.

(Che graciously told me I could use his wonderful sign-off:)

HSS Band 2009-10.3 Parent Coffee; Exhibition & Potluck; Uniforms

Hi Band Boosters!
I heard some promising music already from our students yesterday; and it was only the first day! We're off to a good start.

Here's an update on some coming events:

New Band Parent Coffee: Wednesday, August 19 7pm middle-school lecture hall
If you're new to marching band, please join us for some refreshments and some general info about the fun band season ahead of us. Returning parents, please join us as well to meet our new parents and catch up with everyone. (The Hawk Fly-by to pick up back-to-school forms is scheduled from 4-7pm in the front hall of the school; and the band students will be finishing up at 8pm, so you can drop by the coffee in between.) We look forward to seeing you!

Exhibition and Pot-luck: Friday, August 28 6pm
Come enjoy the first performance of the 2009 Marching Hawks. The marching band will perform on the blacktop near the tennis courts in the rear of the school at 6pm. After the performance, all band students and their families are invited to a pot-luck dinner in the HS cafeteria. You'll have the chance to sign up for Tag Day and other volunteer opportunities; pay for marching shoes; and order Band Booster T-shirts. (Thanks to Mary Anne Mulligan who again is organizing our "Hawk Flight Crew" shirts!) Boosters will provide drinks and paper goods. We ask families with last names A-M to bring side dishes or dessert and N-Z to bring a main dish to share. (FYI - All members of band boosters are welcome to watch the performance and join us for the potluck.)

Volunteer Opportunity
It's time to measure the students and assign band uniforms. Dottie Andrews will again be organizing this effort and could use some helping hands. If you can help out, please meet her in the band room Monday and Tuesday (the 24th and 25th) anytime between 1pm - 5pm. Thanks!

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch with me. I'd love to hear from you.

Looking forward to a great band season,
