HSS Band 2010-11.25 Reminder from Mr. Burke; Senior pictures for end-of-year concert

Dear Band Boosters,

Please see this note from Mr. Burke about attendance for marching band at football game(s):

The marching band will continue to attend the games in support of the football team, and in accordance with the commitment we made at the beginning of the season with regard to grades.

If the football team wins this Friday night, Nov. 19, then the next game will be either Friday, Nov. 26 or Sat. Nov. 27. This will be a volunteer participation game since it is a Holiday weekend. A poll will be taken on Monday, Nov. 22 to gauge attendance for the game. If we get enough members to go, we will go. This game will not affect grades.

I know there are commitments that may conflict with these games. The best policy is to let Mr. Burke know as soon as possible, so something can be worked out.

SENIOR SLIDE SHOW: end-of-year concert

To ALL band members: Wind Ensemble; Symphonic Band; Marching Band; Color guard; etc.

At the final concert of the year in June, we present a slide show recognizing all our seniors. This year, Mark Sudik has volunteered to create the slide show. HSS Band 2010-11.24 Home Football Game Friday - report 6:15p

Hi Band Boosters!

Congratulations to the football team for their awesome win over McLean last week! They'll be playing at home tomorrow, Friday the 19th, against Washington & Lee.

I've had some fun feedback about what a great job the band did in the stands last Friday at the game ... and they get the chance to do it again this week. Marching band students should report to the band room by 6:15pm on Friday. No uniforms; dress warmly. The band will perform before the game and in the stands during the game (no halftime show).

We will have just a few items of equipment to take out on the field; we've got two parents lined up to help (thanks Che and Mike A!); and the Dowells have again volunteered to rope off the stands (thanks Bettina and Rob!) ... if any one else can get there early (6:15pm) to help out, please let me know (we could use 1 or 2 more people to get the snacks and water to the field).

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Marching Band Award Dinner last week ... all the food was great; parents - and students - pitched in to help set up, serve, and clean-up; the students did a great job with their presentations; and I was reminded once again how fortunate we are to have Mr. Burke's leadership for the Band program ~ our kids benefit in many ways from participating in band. [NOTE: I have a few spoons and one nice round plastic container - perhaps used for cupcakes? left from the evening --- if you're missing some utensils or plasticware from the dinner, please let me know and I'll return them to you, all nice & clean!]

We're just a few weeks away from our December activities; mark your calendars for these events:

9 HIGH SCHOOL BAND CONCERT -7pm
Fruit Delivery and pick up.
10 Tiny tots Concert (w.e.)10am

11 All District Band Auditions

West Potomac high school
21 Tiny Tots performance at Ft. Belvoir Elementary School

Thanks again for all the great support out there .... you all really put the 'boost' in Band Boosters!!

HSS Band 2010-11.23 Orange you glad ... one more chance!

Good Morning Band Boosters!
(I loved getting that extra hour of sleep this weekend; but when the alarm went off at 5:30 this morning, I was wishing for another hour!)

Our Fruit Sale Chair (thanks, Linda!) is giving us all another chance to order fruit: you can bring your order form to the marching band banquet Tuesday night, or send it into school with your band student through Tuesday. Wednesday is the absolute last day to send in orders, as the big order with Florida Citrus Grove must be called in so that we receive the fruit by December 9. Please spread the word to all band students. Remember: each student gets $5 credit on their student account for every box of fruit they sell.

Marching Band Award Banquet is Tuesday:

HSS Band 2010-11.18 It's Time to Sell Fruit! (and send in trip payment #1)

Dear Band Boosters,

Thanks!
Can't start this note w/out thanking all the TERRIFIC volunteers who helped with this busy Homecoming & Competition Weekend -- from pizza and snacks on Friday afternoon; to the game and all the festivities Friday night; to the competition Saturday there were MANY hands helping out and making it all run smoothly ... and congrats to the students for a great job with multiple events: the neighborhood parade on Friday; providing great music for the game that night -- including putting on a wonderful show even though it was late and cold; and then concluding with a professional performance at the Oakton competition. The Hayfield Marching Hawks are a class act!

FOR ALL BAND MEMBERS: It's time to start selling fruit!

Many thanks to Linda Lichtman who has volunteered to chair the fruit sales this year. Information has come home with your students, plus there's info on the band web site

In addition, Linda has provided some order forms and a spread sheet for keeping track of sales (attached to this email and on the band web site). As a veteran band parent, she's developed and used these forms for several years -- they've greatly simplified the whole process of selling and tracking her children's fruit sales.

1. An EXCEL spreadsheet useful for tracking your sales. You enter the customer's information and quantity of fruit ordered, and the spreadsheet will calculate the amount of the sale. It also allows you to keep track of cash and checks received and shows the outstanding balance. Please print and return a completed copy of the spreadsheet with your order. Be sure that you have entered your student's name and your email and phone number in case we have any questions. (Fruit sales 2010.xls) [NOTE from Lorraine: This was REALLY helpful last year when it came time to tally the total fruit sales and place the order; this is a wonderful tool to use if you have more than just one or two orders to keep track of!]

2. A customizable WORD document that your parents can either print and fill in or download, modify, print and then circulate around their office. Choose either son or daughter or both if applicable, fill in your child's name, and the instrument he or she plays. You may want to further customize the form by stating in which band(s) he or she plays. Be sure to sign the bottom, under Thanks again. An order form is also attached for your convenience and can be printed on the back of the customizable document. (customizable fruit info.doc)

3. Additional order forms. (Fruit order form.doc)

ONE final note about fruit sales: Please make sure all payments accompany your order; and that checks and cash are clearly labeled. Double-check that the correct payment is included with your order, and please make sure your student's name and contact info are on the final order.

REMINDER: your students will earn a $5 credit applied to their students account for each box of fruit that is sold. DEADLINE: November 5.

DEADLINE FOR TRIP PAYMENT #1
The deadline for the first payment for the Orlando Trip was last Friday, October 15. If your students would like to attend the trip, please send in the first payment ASAP to reserve your spot. Information about the trip is on the band web site http://www.hayfieldbands.com/ (Check for $166 made out to Hayfield Secondary School)

Schedule for the Week:
Tuesday,Oct.19, 6pm-8pm m.b.rehearsal
Wednesday,Oct.20, 2:30pm-4:30pm, m.b.rehearsal
Thursday,Oct.21, 2:30pm-4:30pm, m.b. rehearsal

Looking Ahead:
Marching Band VBODA competition: Saturday, October 30
Marching Band in Hayfield Farm Neighborhood Halloween Parade: Sunday, October 31 1pm
Marching Band Home Football Game (Senior Recognition Night): Friday, November 5
Marching Band Award Banquet: Tuesday, November 9

Once again -- a big thanks to all the hardy parents and student volunteers, who worked so hard this past weekend ... I think the announcer at Oakton was genuinely impressed by our outstanding HAWKS FLIGHT CREW ... and our big cheering section in the stands!

Please feel free to call or email with suggestions, ideas or questions.

Humbly serving our kids and happy to be a band parent,
Lorraine

HSS Band P.S. ~ update and request from Hayfield alumna

Hi Band Boosters --

I forgot to include this item in the latest Booster Email ...

Our band students are special people and make a difference in the world ... one of our graduates from last year is now at Syracuse and participating in the marching band there (If you get a chance, check out the Syracuse marching band uniforms by the way; same as Hayfield's!!) Rebecca is partcipating in a fundraiser and asked if I could spread the word at Hayfield ... I'm happy to do so.

Here's the note from Rebecca with the details ....

Dear Band Boosters,

Many of you know I love marching and everything that else that the band gets involved in. One of the neat things that the Syracuse Marching band is doing is raising money for ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. On November 6th college marching bands from all over the country are marching for ALS. Please consider being a part of my team by donating money to this worthy cause. You can make a donation by going to my website:

http://web.alsa.org/site/TR/ALSEvent/UpstateNewYork?px=2885160&pg=personal&fr_id=7111

Thank you so much!

Rebecca Reed

Please feel free to share this information with friends or family that may be interested.

HSS Band 2010-11.17 Busy Week: Practice; Homecoming; Oakton Competition

Hi Band Boosters,

Homecoming and a competition this week!

The schedule for the week is on the band web site (and below).

On Friday, the marching band students will stay after school. The boosters will feed them pizza and dessert; they will participate in a parade through the Hayfield Farm neighborhood at 5pm. When they return from the parade, they'll get ready for the football game (uniforms, etc.) as usual. At halftime, they'll participate in the Homecoming Activities, and then, after the football game, they'll perform their marching band show.

In addition to the usual volunteers for the football game, we need:
  • volunteers to help serve pizza and drinks (setup around 3pm; serve 3:30-4:30; clean up)
  • volunteers to send in desserts (about 4-5 people sending in 1-2 dozen cookies/brownies/etc.)
If you can help, please see the Homecoming Pizza & Dessert section on SignUpGenius: http://signupgenius.com/go/hssband or send me an email (bandlsm@gmail.com)

On Saturday, the performance is at 3pm; students report to our field to rehearse by 11:15am; parent volunteers are needed around noon when the students will dress in uniforms and we'll load the truck. MB Banquet Slide Show: The MB banquet is scheduled for November 9, and Bao Nguyen has volunteered to put together a slide show for the dinner. If you have pictures you'd like to share with him, you can put them on a CD and send them to band. (Please deliver to Bao's daughter, Vina.)

(Looking Ahead) MB Senior Slide Show: Mark Sudik has volunteered to put together the senior slide show for June, and can start collecting pictures of your senior now (a baby picture and a senior picture). (If you're getting something together for the yearbook, now's a good time to send something to her as well. FYI SR Parents: Last day to order yearbook ads is Oct 15) If you can email digital images, that's best. msudik@cox.net

Many, many thanks to Bao, Karen Dubay, Che Russell, Jean Martelli, and Mike Adams for contributing to the Shutterfly site; we've got some wonderful pictures from this band season!

Here's the link and password: Site URL: http://hayfieldband.shutterfly.com/

And, for even more photos, here's the link to Dr. Kinder's site: http://www.hayfieldpictures.com/Band

MANY THANKS!
The marching band gave another great show at Friday's game last week, and contributed to a fun evening w/ their music before and during the game. Great job, students and directors! And a special note of congrats to the Middle School students who participated and did a great job too; it looks like we have a promising future for marching band!

And, amazing teamwork by our Band of Volunteers! There's a lot of equipment and instruments to move around, and we truly need every volunteer - I always fear I'm going to leave someone out, but many thanks to all these stellar parent volunteers: Che and Atsuko; Ed and Sabrena C; Mike A; Mike R; Jeff and Sundik; Richard; Kevin and Donna; Sol and Jocelyn - and son, Thomas!; Rob; Michelle; Dottie; Linda; Ralph; Robert ... with thanks to these families for contributing snacks & water: Rodriguez, Capel, Taylor, Gardner, Fabre, Russell, John, and Valdez.

FYI - Don't forget to check out the band booster blog now & then for more info: there are links to upcoming events (such as competitions); and other information. http://www.hayfieldbandboosters.blogspot.com/

Lastly - I received some nice feedback from a parent who was running the bleachers over the weekend for exercise; she pointed out that the cleanest section of the stands by far is the Band Section -- so, hats off to all the students (and the parents who help) for being thoughtful and responsible.

I look forward to seeing you at the booster meeting on Thursday.

HSS Band 2010-11.15 FYI for ALL band members: Attn Ladies with Concert Dresses; Band Booster Meeting 10/7; Spring Trip

Hi Band Boosters ~
Three items in this message for all band families (SB, WE, MB) ....

(1) Concert Dresses
we're currently measuring ladies for the black concert dress that is required for performances so we can place an order for the dresses ...

It would be helpful if some of the students could actually try on a dress to see which size would be best for them (when their measurements are between sizes) ...

if you have a Size 6, 8, or 10 and would be willing to let a few girls try it on for sizing, can you please let me know by email (bandlsm@gmail.com) and then send it to school w/ your daughter on Friday (band class is 5th and 7th period that day.)

(2) Fall Band Booster Meeting
Our Fall meeting is on the calendar for Thursday, October 7 at 7pm in the band room. Preliminary agenda items include: Tag Day Wrap up; Spring Trip preview; Homecoming plans; Yearly Calendar; Financial situation. If you have items to suggest for the agenda, please email me at bandlsm@gmail.com and I look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

(3) Spring Trip - Preliminary Info on Band Web Site
It's Orlando in 2011! Check out the interest form under the Spring Trip tab on the site. Interest Form

I look forward to hearing your comments, suggestions and questions -- feel free to get in touch with me.

HSS Band 2010-11.14 Measure for concert dresses; Schedule

Hi Band Boosters,

Here's a note from Mr. Burke about Concert Dress:

All students in band are required to wear a specific uniform for concerts. The first performance with the uniforms for this season will be December 7, 2010.

The gentlemen are required to wear a black tuxedo jacket with black tuxedo pants, a black bow tie, black cummerbund and a white tuxedo shirt. Parents of males are on their own to source this through local retailers. [In the past, JC Penny's has had good deals]

The ladies are required to wear a black dress sold by Stage Accents. We save on shipping by placing one large order. To prepare for the order, we'll have volunteers from Band Boosters in the classroom the first week of October to measure the ladies and take orders. If your daughter needs to order a dress this year, please send in a check for $65.00 made payable to Hayfield Band Boosters.

We're looking for some moms to help size the ladies or the concert dresses. If you can come into school during band class (5th or 7th period on Wednesday or Friday), please email me bandlsm@gmail.com and Mr. Burke at patrick.burke@fcps.edu

Note: 5th period is 10:32-12:05 and 7th period is 12:36-2:05.

Heres's the schedule for the week from the web site:

Tuesday, Sept.28, 6pm-8pm m.b.rehearsal
Wednesday, Sept.29, 2:30pm-4:30pm, m.b.rehearsal
Thursday, Sept. 30, 2:30pm-4:30pm, m.b. rehearsal
Friday, October 1, Home Football Game.

PICTURE ORDERS: Wednesday
Photographer will be in the band room on Wednesday, Sep 29 from 3pm - 7pm to take orders for photos. Bring your checkbook. From past experience, you also should be prepared to wait. A sales rep will meet w/ each person individually to look at proofs and take order.

HOME FOOTBALL GAME: Friday
Thanks to everyone who has signed up to help on Friday. It looks like we could use one more case of water; a few more parents to help with uniforms (NOTE - this includes having someone in charge of 'plumes' for the hats); and more people to move equipment before the game and at halftime. We especially need volunteers to help before the game: we've got ladders; a drumset; props; and lots of other stuff to get out onto the field. Here's the online signup:
http://signupgenius.com/go/hssband or send me an email if you can help.

And - did you see the notice that, thanks to a promotion from Capital One, admission to the game on Friday is FREE. I'm guessing we'll have a good crowd!

As always, thanks for all your support ~ it makes a difference for the kids.

HSS Band 2010-11.8 Come Staple With Us: Tuesday during Band 6-8pm

Hi Band Boosters,

HELP NEEDED ~ It's time for our annual "Staple Party!"
To get envelopes ready for tag day, we need volunteers to come to the band room during band rehearsal Tuesday (Sept 7th) from 6pm-8pm. BYOS (Bring your own stapler); parents, siblings, friends are all welcome to help; this can be used for service hours for students. (There may be cookies . . . . !)
By the way, last year we received thousands of dollars in donations that came in from these "Sorry We Missed You" envelopes that are assembled at the Staple Party ... your help with this really benefits the entire band program.

We also need volunteers to help count money on Saturday afternoon, anytime between 1:30 and 3:30pm. Please let me know if you can help.

Drivers needed for Wednesday, September 8 after school.
The marching band students will perform at Island Creek Elementary to encourage band participation by the elementary-school students. We need parents to help drive students and instruments to the school. We'll meet by the band classroom door no later than 2pm. Students are dismissed at 2:05pm; we'll try to depart for Island Creek by 2:20pm. Please let me know if you can help ... and how many students/instruments you can fit.

If you haven't checked out our online volunteer sign-up, I invite you to look it over and give me your feedback. If you'd like to volunteer, but prefer not to use the online system, just send me an email to let me know what you'd like to do.

I hope everyone gets to enjoy this beautiful holiday weekend! I always have a tough time saying "good-bye" to summer; but it's fun to look forward to all the exciting things we have coming up this fall.

Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about band.

Thanks for supporting the band students,
Lorraine

HSS Band 2010-11.7 Event Wed. 9/8; Shoe Orders; Tag Day preview

Hi Band Family,

After-school Event: Wed. September 8
The marching band will perform at Island Creek Elementary School Wednesday, September 8 right after school. This is a demonstration performance to get their 5th graders excited about band. We'll need some parent volunteers to help drive the students and their instruments to Island Creek, and back to Hayfield after the performance. If you can help, please send me an email to give us an idea of how many cars we'll have. On Wednesday, park in the back of the school, and meet outside the band room before 2pm. (Dismissal is at 2:05p; we'll try to leave by 2:20p)
Other details: the students will probably be asked to wear their band T-shirt; Mr. Burke will decide whether to have marching band rehearsal when they return from Island Creek, based on how much time they have.

Shoe Sales, Tuesday, September 7
The shoe rep will be at rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept 7 (6pm-8pm). The kids will get measured and we'll place the order. When the shoes come in, Mr. Burke will ask the kids to bring in a check. He'll announce the amount. (Checks made payable to Hayfield Band Boosters)

Tag Day is Coming: Saturday, September 11 7:30am - 3pm
Look for more details next week about our first Tag Day. Here's some basic info:

The groups are posted in the band room on the bulletin board in the front of the room. Students should have signed up with a group and contacted a driver. IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE to be a back-up driver, or can help drive, please let me know. (We're looking for a few more drivers to help out.)
Drivers will be contacted by phone before Saturday the 11th to confirm assignments and cell-phone numbers.

Students and drivers should arrive at the band room on Saturday morning between 7:30am and no later than 8am. The students will change into their uniforms and receive instructions. Parents will receive packets, including their neighborhood assignment, and Tag Day instructions.

Plan on arriving in your assigned neighborhood by 9am. (Don't knock on any doors before 9am; but do try to start as soon after 9:01am as possible.)
You can bring snacks and drinks with you; you may stop for a lunch break, but we encourage those breaks to be as brief as possible. (Fast food; not a sit-down restaurant!)

Return to the band room between 2pm and 3pm to turn in money and uniforms. We'll need some volunteers to help count money as it comes in; if you can help between 1pm-3:30pm, please let me know. (Thanks to those who have replied already!)

Then, give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done; and get ready for Saturday the 18th when we do it all again!
Thanks in advance for all your work.

Keep checking the band web site for details about rehearsal schedules; events; and more.
Looking ahead:

Hi Band Boosters,

I'm really looking forward to seeing the marching band's performance this evening; I know they've been working hard the past 2 weeks!

As you may know, the marching band program needs lots of parent help to be successful. (You can learn about some of the different volunteer opportunities in our New Parent Brochure, available on the Band Booster Blog.)

This year we're trying a new online sign-up for volunteers. We'll be talking more about volunteering at the potluck tonight but, if you'd like to check out SignUpGenius before then, here's the link:

http://signupgenius.com/go/hssband

To use SignUpGenius, you first login .... which means providing an email address and creating a password. (Ugh - yes, sorry - another password!) Once you've got an account, you can sign up to volunteer; check back at your convenience; make changes to your sign-up, etc. SignUpGenius does not share your email address. (Alternatively, you can let me know what you'd like to sign up for, and I can sign you up.)

I'd love your feedback on SignUpGenius ... if you check it out today, please email me any questions or suggestions ... or catch me at the events tonight.

Also - If you'd like to order a band booster t-shirt, and/or pay for marching shoes, bring your checkbook tonight. (We'll have some Booster shirts available so you can check out sizes; see order form attached. We're submitting the order for t-shirts on Monday morning, so the deadline for ordering is Sunday.)

I'm looking forward to the evening!

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2010-11.4 Band Booster T-shirts (order by Sunday night)

Hi Band Boosters!

If you're interested in ordering a Band Booster t-shirt for marching band .... here are 3 options:

(1) Print the attached form; complete the form; send check & completed form to school and ask your student to place it in the band booster mailbox (on the wall in the band office hall)
(2) Forms will be available this evening at the pool party at Hayfield Farm pool
(3) Forms will be available at the Potluck Dinner Friday evening at the HS cafeteria (after the performance by marching band)
(please include payment with order form; checks made payable to Hayfield Band Boosters)

The t-shirts this year are navy blue with orange lettering; the design is slightly different from the shirt we had for the past two years. At the pool party and the potluck, we will have last year's t-shirts available so you can check out sizes before ordering.

So that we can have the t-shirts in time for the first home game on Friday, September 10: PLEASE TURN IN ORDERS BY SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 11pm.

(If anyone's interested in helping coordinate the spirit wear sales, just drop me a line.)

I'm looking forward to watching the performance on Friday; I know the kids are working hard!

Thanks for the great questions and comments I've been getting; feel free to get in touch with me.

HSS Band 2010-11.3 Week 2 of Marching Band

Hi Band boosters,

Thanks to all the parents who joined us last week at our Welcome Coffee. It was great to meet some new faces and re-connect with returning families. (If you weren't able to attend, check out the brochure for New Parents on the band booster blog at http://www.hayfieldbandboosters.blogspot.com/ -- See Favorite Links)

The week of 8/23-8/27/2010:
Marching band Rehearsals
from 8am-5pm Monday - Friday

Thursday, 8/26:
Band pictures (individual & group) taken during the day (Students wear marching band uniform.)
Pizza party at Hayfield Farm Pool 5pm-8pm. (Band rehearsal will end a little early so students can change and get to the pool at 5pm.) The pool is located at the end of Hayfield Rd in the Hayfield Farm community (across Telegraph Road from the high school). Boosters will provide pizza, drinks, paper goods and the pool entrance fee. We ask students to bring a dessert or side dish (bag of chips) to share. The pool closes at 8pm, so please plan on picking up your student right at 8pm.
(If you can help with this event, please reply to me at bandlsm@gmail.com -- we'll need to purchase drinks and paper goods ahead of time, and then help set up and serve on Thursday evening.)

Friday, 8/27: Performance and Potluck starting at 6pm. The marching band will perform on the blacktop near the tennis courts at 6pm. We'll follow the performance with a potluck dinner in the HS cafeteria. At the potluck you'll have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer positions, pay for marching shoes, and order a band booster T-shirt (optional). Families with last names A-M please bring a main dish to share; last names N-Z bring a side dish or dessert.
(If you'd like to help with this event, please let me know at bandlsm@gmail.com We'll need to do some shopping ahead of time, plus set up around 4:30p-5:45p, and then clean up afterwards.)

Looking ahead:
Week of 8/30: rehearsals 5p-8pm (M, T, W, Th)
Friday 9/3: band plays at orientation 7:30am -8:30am
