Hayfield High School Band Msg #14

Band Booster Family,

First of all, thank you to those that are donating snacks & water for our students @ their “real” 1st home football game.  To save you a trip & strain on your backs, you don’t need to bring them into the Band room, but just leave them in your vehicle or the back entrance of the school.  As we begin heading to the stands around 6:30 pm, we can pick them up on our way.

Second, I forgot to mention that “volunteers” will go through the back gate to the field & won’t need to pay.  However, in terms of courtesy, we don’t want to take advantage/abuse this privilege.  We are allotted about 10-15 “free volunteer entries.”  If you are either a member of the Athletic Boosters or have paid for season passes for athletic events, I’d encourage you to use them @ the front gate.  Again, thank you for your volunteer spirit that our kids truly appreciateJ  See you tomorrow evening!  HAWKS ROCK!

Finally, Mr. Burke reported another $550 in Tag Day mail-in donations bringing our total to approximately $15,000…who would’ve thunk it;)  We are truly blessed!

Please note the following from Mary Power, one of our Band Booster family members:

Dear ANGP Committee Members and other interested parties,

Next Wednesday, October 5th, at 7:00 in the Hayfield Auditorium, the ANGP is sponsoring a viewing of the documentary movie Race to Nowhere.

If you have not heard about it yet, you can read more about the film, the history of it, and even see some trailer clips at the following site.

http://www.racetonowhere.com/

For whatever reason, we have only sold about 20 tickets and we need to sell at least 30 more to get our deposit back, and then need to sell more than

that to make any money.  Last Spring several other FCPS High schools had a showing, and at Chantilly HS, they sold a whopping 663 tickets!  I just know

the Hayfield Community has lots of potential to generate a great audience as well.  ANGP is a great way to keep our area teens safe on June 14th , 2012.

We would love it if you would buy a ticket and come, but we could also really use your help in getting the word out further into the community.  So far, we have

distributed over 2,500 flyers, mostly to area Elementary Schools.  (However, Island Creek and Lorton Station principals would not approve sending home in the flyers

like the other area schools).  If you teach at or attend an area Preschool, other Middle/High school, Sunday School, Gym, Dance Studio, or have a bulletin board in your community,

or some other venue to take a stack of flyers and distirbute, please let me know.    If your kids are part of a team at Hayfield, and can send a flyer to a parent distribution list, that would also help.

I can give you 10 flyers, 20 flyers, 100 flyers, I have loads of them printed on hot orange paper ready to go.  I will do my best to get them to you.

There are endless possibilities, we just need some help in getting the word out to places where interested parties might be.

You can reach me via this email, or by phone ( 703-517-3174).   I am around....

Thanks for your support, we can do so much more in numbers than alone.

Mary Power

NOTE: Both Dottie Andrews & I have seniors this year; so, if you’re interested in being Band Booster Prez or Vice Prez next year, please send me an e-mail.  This will help the transition & keep the legacy goingJ

Hayfield High School Band Msg #12...Herndon Competition Results & Videos...Dedicated to Matt Keeports & Family

Band Booster Family,

Prelude:  I have such great respect and feel so proud of our students because they played their hearts out and gave a moving performance for Matt & his family…such a blessingJ

First of all, congratulations to the Hayfield Marching Band for taking overall 3rd place!!!  A few key things to keep in mind:

1.  This was their 1st full performance in front of a crowd because the 1st home game was moved

2.  For some reason, when we showed up to Herndon, the band had to go immediately to the competition field with no warm-up/practice

3.  Without knowing the specific scores and based on something Mr. Burke taught me many years ago, I assess that the actual point scores were all within a few points of each other

Second, THANK YOU to ALL the parents, siblings, student helpers, friends, and anyone else that volunteered today!  This included getting the rental truck, sizing/fixing uniforms, loading/unloading the trucks, and so much more.

NOTE: I’m going to do something fairly risky & that is to recognize & thank everyone.  However, because of my old age, I’m certain that I’ll probably miss someone.  If I do, please send me an e-mail; so, I can correct my oversight:

Uniform dry cleaning:

Robert Dowell

Sol & Thomas Valdez

Robert Palting

Jeff Eyink

Student helpers: Katie & there were others, but I apologize for not getting their names

Third, THANK YOU to Mr. Burke, Mr. Helm, and the other assistants!  Since I work so closely with them, I get to see how they're educating our students.  It's more than music; it's the whole person concept--hard work, integrity, and character building...these are life lessons:)

Please see video links of today’s Herndon Competition…please feel free to share with family & friends:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7DHOJJk6ac

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fu_GqXxKWs

Fourth, please do three things for me:

- Congratulate your kid & give them a big hug

- Ask them how they can improve as an individual to help the band get better

(for example more practice, help someone else, etc)

- Ask yourself how you can help your kid as a Band Booster to get better for

the band (for example volunteer some of your time...they grow up quickly &

you don't want to miss it)

NOTE: I had a few parents ask me to pass the following on: As adults, we need to set the example for not only our kid, students, but for others that are @ all events that we attend.  “…we need to keep the kissing smooching, hugging, feeding each other, etc. to a minimum in front of them. We are their role models after all.”

NOTE: Both Dottie Andrews & I have seniors this year & will not be Band Booster Vice Prez or Prez; so, if you’re interested, please send me an e-mail.  This will help the transition & keep the legacy goingJ

Fifth, a few reminders for upcoming events:

- Next home football game...be in band room 6 pm, Fri, 30 Sep

Hayfield High School Band Msg #11...Herndon Competition, Saturday, 24 Sep 2011...Dedicated to Matt Keeports & Family

Band Booster Family,

Prelude: A few months ago, the Hayfield Band Boosters lost a family member, Matt Keeports, trumpet player that graduated last year.  While @ the viewing, I spoke to his father, US Air Force Colonel Tim Keeports.  Tim shared how much Matt loved band because it gave him purpose to be around those that loved & energized him.  Instead of flowers & other gifts, the Keeports asked that people send donations to the Hayfield Band.  As we begin this competition season, I ask that we dedicate this year to Matt & his family.

First of all, point of reference: the black marching band pants are called “bibsters/bibs.”  This is my 7th year as a Band Booster, & I still don’t know why they’re called “bibsters/bibs???”  However, please note that they are brand new this year; so, if they haven’t gotten that dirty from the two successful Tag Days, then there is no need to wash/dry them.

Second, in preparation for this Saturday’s 1st competition of the year @ Herndon, we are getting the marching band jackets dry cleaned.  THANK YOU to Atsuko Russell, Mr. Burke, & the students for gathering them up to be taken to Crest Cleaners near the Kingstowne Plaza Giant supermarket.  Crest gave us the best deal for $200 for all 45 piecesJ

IMPORTANT NOTE: I’ve learned over the years that for some of the different competitions and various awards (ie citizenship, spirit, and so on awards) that they begin grading you the moment the busses arrive.  There are some observers, workers, volunteers, and the like that are asked about how they were treated from school band members, their band boosters, families/fans, etc.
