Hi Band Family!

(1) Congrats for All District Band Auditions!
Unofficial results for HS are up on the Jeb Stuart web site; http://www.raiderband.org/alld/High%20School09results.htm You have to know your audition # to check your results. As soon as the official results are released, Mr. Burke will post them (and then I'll share them in an email).

Unofficial results for MS are that all of our Hayfield students made it! Congrats to: Sonia Romero (Flute), Elissa Lichtman, (Clarinet), Rebecca Booth, Mitchell Burke (Euphonium), Tanner Beck (Percussion), Stephen Sudik (Percussion), Jonathan Baik (Bari Sax)

If you think you'd like to attend, but don't want to ride the bus, please let me know and I can give you further details. (There are special security restrictions, directions, etc.)

Another note: The return times are approximate; the buses cannot leave until Ft. Belvoir elementary dismissal is over and all their buses have cleared the bus lanes. (Ft. Belvoir dismissal time is 4pm; last bus usually leaves around 4:20pm)

The concert will be performed in the gym at Ft. Belvoir elementary with an audience of about 600 students (K-2) and teachers. (Seating may be limited; there aren't chairs; it is "on the floor seating.")

This concert was arranged by the Ft. Belvoir Elementary Head Librarian (and HSS parent!) Lory Monaco-Stevenson, with help from the Belvoir School Parent Liaison (and HSS parent!) Gwen Jefferson, and paid for by Ft. Belvoir. This is such a great opportunity both for our high school students, and the elementary school students who will get to enjoy the holiday music!

Fwd: BAND/STRINGS UPDATE #6

FYI . . .

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Margi and Bill Flynn
Date: Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Subject: BAND/STRINGS UPDATE #6
(12/3/09 From Denny Stokes)

PLEASE DISSEMINATE TO YOUR PARENTS

From: denny.stokes

Subject: FACE Parent Meeting

Date: December 3, 2009 9:42:23 PM EST

Greetings, friends:
Thanks to all for the outstanding showing at last night's meetings. On that note, this is a reminder of our upcoming meeting with all FACE parent representatives, as well as any interested parent from any of our 25 school pyramids.
Important Info:
Date: Monday, December 7, 2009
Time: 7:30 pm
Place: King of Kings Lutheran Church
Address: 4025 Kings Way - Fairfax, VA 22033 (very near the intersection of US Rt. 50 and Fairfax County Parkway)
At this meeting, as previously advertised, we will:
  • conduct a general overview of the process, history, and anticipated flow of events in the coming weeks and months
  • review some common goals, understandings and "talking points"
  • identify "to do" items for parent organizations at the school level
  • establish a "steering committee" to facilitate future gatherings
  • Seek specific volunteers for selected tasks.
Also available at this meeting: FACE "Save Band and Orchestra" tee shirts, which will be especially useful for visual impact at upcoming meetings and events. Shirts will be available at $10 each, and for larger groups, 10 shirts for $70. Any checks may be made to FACE, and proceeds will go to funding upcoming expenses as we advocate for our students.

As I mentioned in my previous email, this effort is for the tenaciously spirited: many useful, productive actions have already taken place, but we are just beginning in our efforts to preserve the elementary band and orchestra music programs. I look forward to seeing you next Monday.
All the best.

(11/23/09)  From Beth Reed.

PLEASE DISSEMINATE TO YOUR PARENTS

Dear Students and Parents:

At Lake Braddock Secondary, on Wednesday, December 2, we want to invite all students and parents to join in the efforts to help save Strings and Band in the elementary schools. Students showing their concern makes a huge impact on the county board of supervisors. They need to visually see that our community cares about these programs.

What you can do:

1) Meet OUTSIDE Lake Braddock Secondary at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2nd @ Door 14
2) Dress warmly but if you have Band or Orchestra Spiritwear or a concert uniform please wear it.
3) Bring an appropriate poster or sign. Possible thoughts for signs:
"It begins with me!"  (If elementary student.)
           "Save Strings and Band!"
           "Save the music!"
"Don't let the music be silenced!"
"Face the music... don't cut band and strings!"
"I started Orchestra/Band at __________ (insert local elementary school) in ___ grade.  Look at me now!"
"I Heart (actual heart) band or strings!"
"Product of: [Elementary School Name]"  (Example:  Product of: WHITE OAKS BAND)

4) Bring empty instrument cases for effect.

We want to be a respectful crowd so the signs are better than yelling or screaming.
We ask that this be a silent demonstration!

The event should be over by 7:15 pm. Thanks for all you to support music and the arts; may our voices be heard on December 2nd.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Lorac Lawton at: lawton1989@verizon.net

PLEASE DISSEMINATE TO YOUR PARENTS

Greetings, and thanks for your generous offer to participate in the FACE campaign to preserve music education in our elementary schools.  As the parents, participants and benefactors of this outstanding program, your voice is the most important in what will become a "sea of sound" during the coming budget process.  The collective will of parents and families, properly articulated and overwhelmingly presented, cannot be thwarted in the long run.  Having said that, I would be less than honest if I did not characterize the issue we face as the most serious challenge to music education in Fairfax county in the last 33+ years.

Some general thoughts:
  • Check in often at the FACE Website:  http://faceadvocacy.org/
  • Expect a certain amount of mixed information, even confusion, as the organization of this effort develops.  LOTS of talented people are bringing assets to the process, all with the best intentions.
  • If you, and/or students attended any of the board meetings at libraries on Saturday, thanks for your positive support.  We have received feedback that your presence has impact. There are several such meetings scheduled for December 2, listed on the County website.  WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT LARGE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS IN UNIFORM, WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT.
  • Familiarize yourself with the names of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and the Fairfax County School Board.
  • Familiarize yourself with the process, as outlined on the FCPS website, for signing up as a speaker.  This information can also be found on the FACE site.
  • Tell your kids to go practice (well, of course!).
It's time for us to get together.  You are invited to join us on December 7 at KING KINGS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4025 Kings Way - Fairfax, VA  22033 (very near the intersection of US Rt. 50 and Fairfax County Parkway), 7:30 pm.  At this meeting, we will:
  • conduct a general overview of the process, history, and anticipated flow of events in the coming weeks and months
  • review some common goals, understandings and "talking points"
  • identify "to do" items for parent organizations at the school level
  • establish a "steering committee" to facilitate future gatherings
  • Seek specific volunteers for selected tasks

One of my most common instructions to students during my tenure in FCPS was "You can have whatever you want, if you are willing to work for it, and sometimes, fight for it."  So it is with us. This will require our best efforts and unyielding tenacity...not a project for the faint of heart!  So, let's roll up our sleeves and take charge of this issue!

Looking forward to seeing you on the 7th.

clarification about FCPS meeting on December 2 at Hayfield

Here is an explanation of the Community Dialogue meetings scheduled in December  (many thanks to Michele Menapace):

"The community dialogue on 12/2 is not an open meeting of the school board.  These dialogues are co-hosted by Fairfax County Gov & FCPS.  The sessions ARE chances to comment on the county & schools budget.   Attendees should be prepared to offer suggestions on how to accommodate county & FCPS services within the current, horrible economic times.  Attendees will be asked to address last year's service cuts--which were acceptable/unacceptable--and to offer any creative ideas for reconciling needs with still-declining property values & tax revenues.  These ideas will most likely be gathered in small-group discussions after presentations of the budget situation by FC & FCPS budget staff.
A school board member will probably be in attendance, but the meeting moderators will be keeping everyone on-task so they can gather input from all participants."

HSS Band 2009-10.37 Plans for Friday's Game due to Rain

Hi Band Boosters,

Due to the rainy weather, plans for tomorrow's game are being changed . . .

Mr. Burke is passing on the information as of now (2pm, Thursday afternoon):

Here's the latest from swampfield…
It's not official yet, but the game will be moved to Lee High School, and it will one of two games played tomorrow night. It's being moved to Lee because they have an artificial turf, and so they are playing multiple games. If we are the first game, it will start around 5pm. If we are the second game, it will start around 8:30pm.
This means….
No home game tomorrow. Pep band. No uniforms. Raincoats and warm clothes.
Busses will leave either 4pm-ish or 7:30pm-ish.
That's what I know. More details as I get them.

From: Margi and Bill Flynn <my4flynns@verizon.net>
Date: Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 5:36 PM
Subject: BAND/STRINGS UPDATE #3

11/9/09

PLEASE DISSEMINATE TO YOUR PARENTS

The Community Dialogue scheduled for November 14th could use some student support.  Please consider bringing your elementary, middle, and/or high school band or orchestra student to one of the meeting locations with the following:

1.  Instrument case (empty).
2.  Sign:  Elementary level student-- "It Starts With Me"; others--be creative and respectful.
3.  Band/Orchestra T-shirts.  Please wear your school's band/orchestra spirit wear, if you have it.

November 14th meeting locations:  Kings Park Library; Sherwood Regional Library; George Mason Regional Library.  You must be in place by 9:30 am.  Line the sidewalks, shoulder to shoulder, but do not block passageways or entryways.  Remain silent.  Let your presence, signage, and instrument cases do the "talking".  If you're able, try to organize students by level with elementary students closest to the library entrance, then middle, then high school.

This email distribution list reaches only 40 people.  Please forward to others who support this issue.

Thanks!

HSS Band 2009-10.36 Friday Plans; Unos Tomorrow; Fruit sales

Hi Band Boosters,

Marching Band: Great job Friday at the Edison game! And, big congrats to the football team for their victory. That win means their first game of post-season is at HOME this Friday, November 13. Marching Band students should report at 5pm for a rehearsal; dress at 6pm; game starts at 7:30pm. The band will perform their regular halftime show.
Parents: We'll need volunteers!
Equipment: get equipment on the field before the game; move equipment into place at halftime; return equipment to the band room after halftime
Stands: put up the ropes to section off the band section of the stands before the game
Snacks: we need about 5 parents to volunteer to send in chips, granola bars, pop tarts, etc.
Water: we need 4 parents to each send in a 24-bottle case of water bottles

NOTE - There will be some middle school students playing with the marching band on Friday. We need some parent volunteers to help fit those students with uniforms when the students report at 5pm. Can you come at 5pm to help with uniforms?

If you can help with any of the above volunteer needs, please let me know at bandlsm@gmail.com.

All Band Students: Tomorrow is our Uno's fundraiser Day! Please print out the attached coupons (copies on the band booster blog too - http://www.hayfieldbandboosters.blogspot.com/) and hand them out to anyone who might be going out to eat Tuesday - lunch through dinner. Also, let's try to meet as a group for dinner at 6:30pm . . . if you can't come until later, that's okay too -- just be sure to bring your coupon!

All Band Students: Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the last day to turn in fruit orders. Please make sure all payment is enclosed with your order. ALSO -- if you've already turned in your order, please double-check with your customers that they know that the box is the 10lb box (1/5th of a bushel; not the 2/5th of a bushel). If anyone needs to adjust an order, please let me know ASAP.

Winter Concert Season: If your son has grown since last year, now's a good time to check and see if that tuxedo still fits! I've heard there are good deals on the tuxedos at JC Pennys and K&G Mens Wearhouse.

Let's hope for beautiful weather for the game Friday night!

Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2009-10.35 Fruit Sale Clarification

Hi Band Boosters,

I'm so sorry ~ we sent out conflicting information about the size of the fruit boxes we're selling.

The information on the band web site is the correct information:
we're selling the 10 lb (or 1/5th of a bushel) boxes of fruit.
The information at the bottom of the cover letter is wrong (we're not selling the 2/5th of a bushel, 20lb boxes)

Here's the deal - we are selling:
10 lb box of navel oranges, 1/5th of a bushel, 16-18 oranges $18
10 lb box of red grapefruit, 1/5th of a bushel, 8-10 grapefruit $18
10 lb box of mixed oranges and grapefruit, 1/5th of a bushel, 6-8 oranges, 5 grapefruit $20

IF YOU NEED TO double-check with your customers about their orders before turning in your forms, please do so. You can turn in the fruit order forms by next Tuesday, November 10. (Please -- no later than Tuesday because we have to get the order mailed to Florida Indian River Groves so we can receive the fruit in December.)

When you turn in your orders, please have checks made payable to Hayfield Band Boosters. If you include cash, please make sure all cash is attached securely for each order.

Thanks so much for helping the band program by selling fruit. And, again, I'm sorry for this mixup and the inconvenience to you.

See you at the Battle of the Birds tonight at Edison!

Mr. Russell put together a great slide show . . . and it's now on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl2osLAOxNY (Thanks, Che!)

Reminders:
Please turn in fruit order forms TOMORROW. Include payment with your orders; checks made out to Hayfield Band Boosters.

Also - the deadline for the first trip payment was yesterday; please turn in the $171.25 check made out to Hayfield Secondary School ASAP.

Finally -- I hope to see many of you at Edison tomorrow for the "Battle of the Birds!" The game is the Fox News High School Game of the Week. Wear your orange and white and come support our team. The football team has dedicated their season to Coach BIlly Pugh, who is recovering from a stroke. Marching band students should report to Hayfield at 6pm to take the bus over to the game.

Angie is very talented . . .

HSS Band 2009-10.31 Uno's Fundraiser - Let's Raise Some Dough!

Hi Band Boosters,

We have an Uno's Fundraiser planned for November 10. If a customer presents Uno's with a special coupon (see attached), the Band Boosters will get 20% of the proceeds! The coupons are good all day ~ lunch through dinner, dine in or carry-out.
Please see the attached flier and coupons. Spread the word among friends, co-workers, relatives, and even complete strangers that they can enjoy a meal at Uno's and help out the band program. (We're not allowed to stand outside the restaurant and distribute the coupons; but we're free to pass them out to as many people as we can ahead of time!) The flier has complete details. Many thanks to Linda Lichtman for setting this up for us!

Thanks to the "Flower Gang" last night. With Atsuko's supplies and tutoring we were able to make the boutonierres for the Senior marching band members for tonight's game. Thanks also to Kim Barber for bringing supplies and her expertise; and Sherri Parmley who also shared her flower talents with us. Here are the many hands that made light work: Leslie Bell, Lory Monaco-Stevenson, Mary Anne Mulligan, Ceci Gunter, Donna Baetsen, Tanya Labriny and daughter Sarah, and Angie P. Flamingo. (Look for a picture or two on the band booster blog.)

See you at the football game tonight!

HSS band 2009.10-30 Uno's night, Candy bags, flowers, Trip money, fruit sales

Good Morning, Band Boosters!

UNO's Fundraiser! Details to come, but, for now, mark November 10 on your calendar for dinner at Unos. Unos will donate part of the proceeds that evening to the band program. (Many thanks to Linda Lichtman for organizing this!)

Treat bags: No tricks, just treats! We're going to give our band students treat bags after the competition on Halloween. Send in candy by Thursday. Meet in the band room from 2:30-4:30 (during rehearsal) on Thursday to assemble the bags. (We do have the bags already.)

Flowers: Reminder that we're making boutonnieres for Senior night on Thursday evening. Right now, the only parents who've let me know they're coming are parents of Seniors! I was thinking it might be a nice tradition for parents of Fresh, Soph, and Juniors to make the flowers for the senior parents! So -- even though I'm "craft-challenged" and have the fine motor skills of a chubby-fingered toddler, I will show up and see if I can help. If you can stop by between 6-8pm, Atsuko Russell has said she can teach us how to do this. Please Bring Your Own Scissors (and in my case, my own band-aids!)

Spring Trip - Please see new information on the band web site about the trip (revised schedule and cost). The deadline for the first payment of $171.25 is due by November 4.

Orange you glad it's Fruit Time! Don't forget to take orders for fruit. The deadline to turn in your order form is November 6. The fruit will be delivered in early December -- perfect time to give gifts of healthy fruit to friends, co-workers, and relatives!

Donations for Football Game - Can you send in a case of water or some snacks?

Volunteers for Saturday's Competition: Please let me know if you would like to help with uniforms, be a bus chaperone, or help with equipment. It's an early schedule! The kids should be on the field to rehearse at 7:30am; load bus at 8:15am; leave at 9am; perform at 11a; return around 2pm.

Special shout-out to the band students who cleaned up the band storage closet this week !! Wow -- it's beautiful! (We should have "before" and "after" pictures!!!) Thank you so much.

We have great band kids and band parents!

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco

FYI - Possible budget cuts for FCPS next year

Band Booster Parents,

For your information, I'm sending along two letters addressing the possible budget cuts for Fairfax County Public Schools next year.

Attached is a helpful letter from our PTSA President, Dick Reed, addressing the issue.  Dick describes the budget problem  (for eg., career  centers may be eliminated) and spells out how we can become informed and get involved.  (Thanks, Dick!)

Below is a letter that the boosters at Glasgow Middle School initiated.  This letter is amined specifically at music programs in the budget.

It looks like FCPS will have some tough decisions to make, and as parents (and teachers and students!), we should try to be informed and active.
Lorraine

Dear Parents of [school] Music Students,

You may have heard that Fairfax County has a severe budget shortfall projected for the next school year. Once of the cuts that the county is considering is cutting ALL Elementary band and orchestra. This will result in an estimated savings of only $7 million, out of a $162 million shortfall.

Here is the link to the news release: http://commweb.fcps.edu/newsreleases/newsrelease.cfm?newsid=1276

Please make your voices heard. Cutting music in elementary school MAY save a few dollars now, but the total negative impact over many, many years will far outweigh any short term savings. This will severely impact not only the kids in elementary school, but middle school and high school music programs as well in the years to come.  Starting music at a young age is so important. We can't let the county cut music programs.

How Can I Help- you may ask. Here's how.

Go to the County website and complete the Budget Feedback Form online. It only takes a minute and you don't have to provide any personal information. You can find that link here:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/survey/fy11suggestions.htm

OR, Attend a community dialog on the budget. To attend, you need to register, and you can do that at this link, or by calling 703-324-9400.  http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/survey/fy11communitydialogue.htm

Community Dialog Dates:
Saturday, October 24, 10 a.m. to noon
- Centreville Regional Library
- Reston Regional Library
- John Marshall Library
Thursday, October 29, 7 to 9 p.m.
- South Lakes High School Cafeteria
- Woodson High School Cafeteria
Saturday, November 14, 10 a.m. to noon
- Kings Park Library
- Sherwood Regional Library
- George Mason Regional Library

Please let the county know THEY CANNOT CUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MUSIC. IT IS TOO IMPORTANT FOR OUR KIDS!!

Thanks for your support!

HSS Band 2009-10.29 Busy Week Ahead

Hi Band Boosters,
Busy week ahead of us!

Boutonnières ~ Thursday 6-8pm (Band room)

Make boutonnieres for senior night (which is Friday). Atsuko Russell has offered to lead this effort. Please consider helping out; we have about 20 seniors this year to honor! Bring Your Own Scissors.

Halloween Goodie Bags ~ Several parents have suggested making Halloween treat bags for the band students for Friday's game. If you'd like to contribute some candy or treats for the bags, please send them in to the band room by Thursday. If you'd like to help assemble the bags (we'll probably do it Thursday during band from 2:30-4:30) let me know at bandlsm@gmail.com

Friday: Home football game with Senior recognition (and Halloween treat bags)

Saturday: VBODA competition -- it's an early one! Kids on the field at school to rehearse by 7:30am; dress and load truck at 8:15am; leave for West Springfield at 9am; perform at 11am; return around 2pm. (Don't forget: black socks, black shoes, t-shirt, lunch, snack money, and a superior attitude!)
NOTE - Students will take their instruments AND their uniform home with them to be ready for the parade through the Hayfield Farm neighborhood.

Sunday: parade in Hayfield Farm neighborhood at 1pm
Band room will be open at 11:30am for instrument pickup; 12:30pm report to Hayfield Farm pool (at the end of Hayfield Road in Hayfield Farm neighborhood); 1pm parade up to the park near the corner of Hayfield Road and Telegraph. 1:45pm dismissed from parade; take uniform and instrument home and return them to school on Wednesday

(The good news is that on Sat night/Sun morning, we set the clocks back one hour; so we all get an extra hour sleep. In theory anyway!)

Looking ahead:
The marching band potluck banquet is on Wednesday, November 4. I'll send details later this week. Unfortunately, we were unable to use the gym this year for a parent vs student volleyball game before the dinner. If anyone has an alternate idea for an activity before the dinner -- and if they'd like to organize it -- please let me know.
DON'T FORGET that Che Russell has offered to put together a slide show - so send him your best pictures from the marching band season! send him an email or you can send a CD to Justin to give to his dad.

Finally, I'd like to thank the many wonderful volunteers who helped make the Homecoming activities so much fun and such a success. Atsuko Russell, Yvette Schuler, Bettina Dowell, Mary Hess, Leslie Bell, Twila Mack, and I think Martha Stewart put together the pizza dinner that sustained our kids for their very long day. A great group of parents supplied an impressive assortment of cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc for dessert - Leslie Bell, Sabrena Capel, Bettina Dowell, Cheryl Wagner, Erin Fitzsimmons, Jessica Tyeryar, Christiana Hawes, Darci Dunn, and I think Emeril Lagasse. Our hardy equipment team did a good job, even with the bad weather: Mary Hess, Nick Milton, Ed Capel, Don Stevenson, Che Russell, the 'equipment students': Jordan, Sarah, Taylor, Mikala, Angie; Dave Collins, Ralph Monaco, Rick Young, Dwayne Jones and I believe Lou Ferrigno. And all the other parents who supplied snacks and water: Sandy Collins, Cheryl Wagner, Christiana Hawes, Karen Reed, Tawnie Jewitt, Mary Hess, Amy Taylor, Sandy Collins, and I believe Rachel Ray. And, to the wonderful parents who helped set up the stands and then clean up afterwards: Bettina Dowell, Kevin and Donna Baetsen, Lory Monaco-Stevenson, and I believe Ann B Davis.
(If anyone notices that I've accidently ommitted a name that should be here, please let me know!! I'm so grateful to all of you who volunteer in any way - our band is that much more fun and successful thanks to all the volunteer spirit!)

BY THE WAY - Don't forget to sell fruit!! (See information on the band web site.)

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2009-10.28 Will it rain on our parade?

Hi Band Boosters,
I've been told that in 30 years of Hayfield Homecomings, it has NOT rained only four times. Hmmmmm -- wonder what our odds are for tomorrow?

School officials will decide about the parade by tomorrow afternoon - as soon as Mr. Burke knows, he'll share that info, and I'll send an email.
Just in case, our band students should prepare for rain (wear a rain poncho or jacket).

School and FCPS officials will decide whether or not to hold the game by the end of the school day, and, again, you can check Mr. Burke's web site and this email for news.

No matter what the weather, we will have pizza and dessert for the band students (it's scheduled between parade time and game time -- approximately 5:15pm)

Mr. Burke and Mr. Helm will evaluate field conditions and the weather as it gets closer to game time and will announce whether or not the kids will play. The name of the game is to maintain that great Hayfield flexibility -- and to have a rain poncho!

Thanks again to all the volunteers who have signed up to help:
Pizza party: Bettina, Twila, Mary, Yvette, Leslie, Atsuko
Desserts: Leslie, Sabrena, Bettina, Cheryl, Erin, Jessica, Christiana, Darci
Uniforms: Sabrena, Sandy, Elsa
Equipment: Ed, Mary, Nick, Hal, Robert, Don, Ralph, Che
Stands: Bettina, Mary Power
Water: Sandy, Cheryl, Christiana, Karen
Snacks: Tawnie, Mary, Amy, Sandy

Let's hope for dry weather!

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2009-10.27 Homecoming Week Ahead!

Hi Band Boosters!
I was impressed with our whole group on Saturday at the Oakton competition. With a very full list of bands in our division, Hayfield wasn't in the top 3 finalists; but, I thought they sounded terrific! (Too bad I'm not a judge, eh?!?!?)
Many thanks to all the supportive parents who helped out: Dave "The Driver" Collins; Mary "Slim Jim" Hess, Nick, Sabrena, Dottie, Gwen, Donna, Don, Ralph, Che, Jean, Bao, Lory, Mary Anne, Ed, and, a special note of thanks to all the student helpers who carried equipment and bags, went looking for extra gloves, and generally are so supportive! I'm sorry I don't have all your names; but you should know you are appreciated.

Our big event this week will be the Homecoming festivities on Friday. There will be a parade through the Hayfield Farm neighborhood starting at 4:45p. The marching band will march in that parade (not in band uniform). We'll then take the kids to the band room and feed them pizza and dessert. (The boosters will provide the pizza and drinks; we'll ask for volunteers to send in desserts.)
After they eat, the kids will get ready for the game. Because of the Homecoming Court activities at halftime, the schedule for band is different from a regular game: the band plays for some of the halftime festivities, and then they perform their program AFTER the game.

Thanks to Leslie, Bettina, Yvette, and Mary who have offered to help with the Homecoming activities. If there's anyone else who would like to help with the pizza and drinks, please email me at bandlsm@gmail.com If you'd be willing to send in cookies or brownies for the kids on Friday, please reply to bandlsm@gmail.com.

We also will need our full complement of game helpers (uniforms, equipment, and snacks). Here's who signed up to help:
Uniforms: Sabrena, Sandy, Elsa
Equipment: Ed,Mary, Nick, Hal, Robert, Don, Ralph (Please let me know if you can stay after the game for the performance.)
Stands: Bettina, Mary Power
Water (send in 1 case of water bottles): Sandy (we'll need 3 more)
Snacks (send in about 2 dozen snacks): Tawnie, Mary H., Amy, (we'll need 1 more)

Thanks in advance for allyour help; if you have any questions or ideas please feel free to get in touch with me!

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2009.10-25 Oakton - play indoors if rain; Thanks for help

Hi Band Boosters,
Thanks to everyone who offered to fill in volunteer positions for this Saturday. Our list now looks like this:

Uniforms (6:30pm): Dottie, Davon

The competition will be held rain or shine; if it's raining hard enough, they'll move the bands indoors to the gymnasium. Spectators can watch in the gym during our performance; after our performance, band kids and parents can go to cafeteria and watch on a live feed.

You can check the Oakton web site for information about tickets, parking, etc. http://oaktonbands.com/classicvisitorinformation.cfm (Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for kids 5-12 and Seniors)

Students should remember to bring drinks, lunch and snack money. PLEASE dress for the weather. (It sounds like if the rain isn't heavy, Oakton will try to have bands perform outdoors.)

In case there are any changes to the schedule, keep checking the band web site, and I'll send an email if I hear anything.

HSS Band 2009-10.24 Great game! Dress payment needed; competition next week

Hi Band Boosters,
I woke up with the Hayfield fight song stuck in my head! Congrats to the football team, and great job by the band.

Good job to all the middle-school musicians who participated last night; I especially enjoyed the group who played the "kick-off" song after the marching band had left the stands to get ready for halftime; that was great!

REMINDER: PLEASE - Send in your payments for your daughter's concert dress ASAP! We have to order the dresses this week so they'll arrive in time for the concert. Make checks payable to Hayfield Band Boosters, for $60. THANKS! (And, guys should make sure they have a tuxedo for the December concert - there may still be a sale at JC Penny's; or K&G Warehouse . .. )

A big thanks to Susan Yarwood for being the "Dressparent" and organizing the measuring and ordering of the dresses.

Reminder that we have the Oakton Competition next Saturday (see http://www.hayfieldbands.com/ for details: kids report to school at 10:45a; perform at Oakton at 2:30p; return 6:30p)

Finally, many thanks to all of you who volunteer in big and small ways for the band! Thanks for the snacks and water; thanks for moving equipment; thanks for helping to clean up; thanks for handing out plumes; and so on. Hats off to: Nick and Mary, Ed and Sabrena, Amy, Marie, Erin, Bettina, Leslie, Cheryl, Don, Che, Ralph, M. Hall, Glenda, Dave, Lory, Hal, Ceci, Kevin, all the student helpers, and the MS parents who I met but now I can't remember your names! I'm sorry if I left anyone's name off the list; please know your help is appreciated and makes a difference. Final thanks to Dave Collins for his extra support of the band last night. (We're all going to chip in and buy Dave his own kicking tee!)

Enjoy the holiday weekend.

HSS Band 2009-10.23 Home game Friday; Meeting highlights; Oakton Schedule

Hi Band Boosters!
Many thanks to the volunteers for Friday's game. Also, a big welcome to the middle-school students who will join the marching band for this game.
Uniforms (report 6pm): Sabrena Capel, Glenda Jones, Elsa Palting
Equipment (report by 6:30pm): Ed Capel, Mary Hess, Nick Milton, Dave Collins, Robert Palting, Don Stevenson, Che Russell
Stands: Bettina Dowell
Water (send in 1 case of water bottles): Sabrena Capel, M. Hall, L Bell, C. Wagner, B. Dowell
Snacks (send in 1-2 dozen snacks): Glenda Jones, Amy Taylor, Marie Sudik

Here are some highlights from the Band Booster meeting last week:
Tag Day Report -- donation envelopes continue to come in, and we're approaching $17,000 in revenue. IMPORTANT - Erin Fitzsimmons would love to have someone join her in running Tag Day next year -- it's more fun with two chairmen, AND it would allow someone the chance to train for the position and be able to take it over when Erin needs to step down. So -- parents of 9th or 10th graders, please consider working on this important band event. (Contact Erin if you have questions.)

New York trip -- preliminary plans are to leave Thursday morning (5am, 4/15) and return either Saturday night or Sunday morning. The itinerary includes a broadway show, visit to Central Park, an Italian dinner, sightseeing, and more. Student performances are scheduled for Friday. Details are still being finalized - check the band web site. The first payment is due November 1.

Uniforms -- plans are to keep the same style of uniform, but replace bibs and jackets as needed; first in line for replacement will probably be the hats.

Fruit Sale -- we need someone to co-ordinate our annual Fruit Sale Fundraiser. Former chair Tim Fay is willing to answer questions and provide guidance on this. Also -- the company was moving toward online sales, so the job may become easier than in the past. Please contact bandlsm@gmail.com and/or patrick.burke@fcps.edu if you can help.

Photos -- parents of seniors should send photos for the Senior Slide Show to Mary Anne Mulligan (3 photos: baby, "young", and senior-year)
ALSO - if you have pictures from marching band this year, Che Russell has offered to put together a slide show for the marching band dinner on November 4. You can contact Che by email, or send in a CD with pictures for Justin to take home.

Mr. Burke has posted the schedule for the Oakton Competition on the band web site:

You pick where the proceeds go – a general fund or a specific group -- such as BAND! See the attached flier for Team_spirit_collection fundraiser or contact Gail Witt

Here's information on how to purchase tribute ads in the programs at competitions:
Oakton: http://oaktonbands.com/bandtributeads.cfm
VBODA at West Springfield: see attached file personal_ad_form

Looking ahead:
We're going to need some extra volunteers for the Homecoming events on October 23 (there's a parade through the Hayfield Farm neighborhood after school, then we feed the band students pizza and dessert before the football game).
We're also going to need some extra help with the Senior Tribute football game on October 30 -- making boutonnieres ahead of time, etc.
If you can lend a hand with either of these events, please let me know: bandlsm@gmail.com

If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to get in touch with me!

The marching band has been invited to march in the Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC this May. Mr. Burke would like to get an idea of how many people can be available that weekend for this unique opportunity. There's a survey question on the booster blog at http://www.hayfieldbandboosters.blogspot.com/

Other items:

Volunteer needed to co-ordinate our Critus Fruit Fundraiser (contact bandlsm@gmail.com if you can help)

Senior Slide Show: Mary Anne Mulligan has volunteered to put together the senior slide show, and can start collecting pictures of your senior now (a baby picture and a senior picture). (If you're getting something together for the yearbook, now's a good time to send something to her as well.) If you can email a digital image to her, that's best.

Have a great week everyone!

HSS Band 2009-10.20 MB takes Second Place at Herndon

Congratulations to the marching band for placing second in their division at the Herndon Competition, Saturday 9/26/2009! They also received an award for best music! (See a photo of the trophy on the band web site; and some photos from the day on the band booster blog.)

Many thanks to all the parents who helped with uniforms, chaperoning, and equipment ~ this couldn't be accomplished without you! (Special thanks to Davon for stopping by the dollar store to stock up on black socks! Our 'emergency' stash is replenished! Also thanks to Dave, Don, and Ralph for getting the equipment to and fro; and for unloading all the equipment at Hayfield before the buses got back to school.)

I was proud to be sitting with Hayfield as our students cheered on other bands who were performing. Even the increasingly heavy rain didn't dampen our students' enthusiasm and good sportsmanship as they applauded for other schools.

I hope everyone gets warmed up and dried off --- and rests up for another fun week ahead of us!

Humbly serving our kids,
Lorraine Monaco
