Band Booster Family,
Well, the Band season has officially began with the success of the pool party even though there was no swimming due to the weather. However, the kids had a great time playing volleyball, basketball, laughing, having fun, relationship building, team building, & trust building. Oh, @ stuffing their faces with pizza, desserts, & drinks;) I was most impressed with how well behaved they were: good language, waiting their turn for food/drinks, cleaning up afterwards, and taking care of each other. We’ve got an excellent bunch of kids.
Please note that we decided not to charge anything for the pool party; so, you should get the $2 back from your kids.
For any event, there are always people to thank: Mr, Burke, Mr. Helm, Allison Andrews, Dottie Andrews, Linda Lichtman, Rob & Bettina Dowell, & Atsuko Russell. This is a core value of being part of the Band Booster Family…volunteerism. Not only taking care of your own kids, but taking care of the other kids as if they’re your own. You will have an opportunity to begin officially signing up to volunteer for various Band events for this season @ tomorrow’s Exhibition & Potluck, 6 pm, Fri, 26 Aug…recommend showing up around 5:30 to drop off your food/drinks:
On Friday, August 26, 2011, the Marching band will be holding our annual “exhibition and pot luck supper” to be held here at the school at 6pm. The Marching band will perform the 2011 show, then have everyone move into the middle school cafeteria for a pot luck supper. We ask that you bring a dish to share. You may want to come before 6pm; so, you can drop off your food/items in the school before the exhibitionJ
PS: For the potluck, please plan on bringing the following based on your last name beginning with:
A-M = Main dish
N-Z = Side dish & dessert
The boosters will provide sodas and paper products and utensils
On 10 & 17 Sep, we will be doing our BIGGEST fundraiser/money maker: Tag Day! For the past 6 yrs, Erin Fitzsimmons has volunteered to be the Tag Day coordinator. This will be her last year because her son Joe is a senior & will be graduating. It is the Band Booster’s #1 priority to find a replacement & shadow her for the next few weeks & pass the torch. Tomorrow night, I’m hoping someone or a few people will volunteer to shadow Erin & help take the reins. This is for the future success of the Band Program & Band Booster Family. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Humbly serving our kids,
Che

Subject: Hayfield High School Band Msg #1
Band Booster Family,
Hope everyone’s summer is going well. I must start by thanking Lorraine & her family: for Ralph, Michael, & Mary having to share her with the Band Boosters for the past two years as President...for EVERYTHING she has done behind the scenes that most of us have not been exposed to. We've been truly blessedJ
For those parents that no longer have students in the band and wish to be dropped from the list, please feel free to reply & let me know…it’s been a pleasure working with all of you & thank you for ALL you did for our kids. If you want to stay in the know, you can visit the Hayfield Band website: http://www.hayfieldbands.com/ or stay on the e-mail listingJ
Welcome to all the NEW Band Booster parents on the e-mail list! Hang on for a fun time that will take a lot of work. Please feel free to contact me or any of our returning parents to get ground truthJ Welcome back to those that have already been part of our Band Booster Family. Please welcome newbies @ every opportunity…and there will be plenty. Ok, let’s get started.
1. Here is the current list of officers and chairs for the coming school year:
President: Mr. Che Russell (Che as in cheeseburger, Cheese-Its, & Chee-tohsJ
VPresident: Mrs, Dottie Andrews (DMAndrews1@fcps.edu )
Secretary: Mrs. Jessica Tyeryar (jltyeryar3@verizon.net )
Treasurer: Mr. Robert Dowell (rdowell001@aol.com )
Tag Day: Mrs. Erin Fitzsimmons (Dfitzsimmo@aol.com )
Fruit Coordinator: Mrs. Linda Lichtman (lindalichtman@yahoo.com )
PTSA liason: Mrs. Jessica Tyeryar
Athletic Booster liaison: NEED A VOLUNTEER
Suggestions for any other positions/liaisons, please let me knowJ
2. Here are my key thoughts on what Band Booster Family is all about:
Big picture: Building the whole-person concept for our students
Key points:
- Mr. Patrick Burke with Daniel Helm run the Band Program
- Through the Band Program, Mr. Burke & Mr. Helm explicitly teach musical concepts but implicitly develop our kids into young adults: discipline, character, work ethic, teamwork, and so on
- Band Booster Family supports Mr. Burke, Mr. Helm, & our students in a myriad of ways
While band is extremely fun, it takes a lot of work behind the scenes. Mr. Burke, Mr. Helm, the officers, chairs, and I can’t do it alone and NEED your help! I ask that you help me spread the message that this is a Band Booster "FAMILY" with shared responsibilities for all of our kids. This is why I created the motto “Humbly serving our kids” in my signature block a few years ago while I was prez, & I want to inculcate it again in each of us:) Again, thank you for all that you have done & yet to do... For the school year, I counted about 15-20 different events each with different aspects of volunteer needs; so, everyone will have multiple opportunities to not only support your kids, but the other kids. With this in mind, I have included 3 attachments:
- The Hayfield Band Packet Letter is very general but is a good primer for the start of the year. Please feel free to forward it to potential new members, family, friends, and co-workers…maybe put it on FacebookJ
- To get to know you better & for emergency contact, please fill out your information in the Hayfield Band Booster List spreadsheet & mark which volunteer areas you are interested in & send back to me. If you can’t open Excel Spreadsheet, here is the info I need you to send me with my info as an example:
Last Name | Student | Father | Mother | Grade | Home Phone | Cell Phone | email address | Tag Day Coordinator | Tag Day Driver | Fund Raising Coordinator | Fun Raising Helper | Uniform Helper-Clinic | Uniform Helper-Game Nights | Uniform Dry cleaning Orgainizer | Spring Trip Chaperone | Equipment Truck Driver | Tiny Tots Concert Coordinator | Tiny Tots Concert Helper | Equipment Setup Games/Competitions |
Russell | Justin | Che | Atsuko | 12 | (703) 405-9065 | (703) 963-4655 | X | X | X | X | X |
- I’ve included a quick reference Hayfield Band Calendar short document to give a little more detail for planning purposes; however, please always note last minute changes through either the Hayfield Band calendar website: http://www.hayfieldbands.com/id1.html or a last minute e-mail from Mr. Burke or me. If you’re interested in a particular event, please feel free to reply to me to show that you’d like to either lead or just volunteer.
3. Below is the most current calendar for the Marching Band this Aug 2011:
August 2011
15-19 Night Rehearsals, 5-8pm
22-26 Band Clinics 8am, 5pm
26 Pot luck Supper/ Exhibition 6pm
29 PERFORMANCE 7:30am
39-Sept.1 Night Rehearsals, 5-8pm
Note: the Hayfield Band website: http://www.hayfieldbands.com/id1.html
4. We still have some Band Booster t-shirts. They will be on sale at the 26 Aug exhibition and potluck supper. These would make great Christmas, birthday, & anytime gifts.
5. Additionally, at the 26 Aug exhibition and potluck supper, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer as TAG DAY drivers and for Marching Band football games and other competitions/events.
6. Pool party info:

7. Finally, I’m always open to new ideas to make our Band Booster better; so, if you have any, please feel free to let me know.
PS: Even though Mr. Burke & Mr. Helm were leaning toward “The Best of Kiss” rock group theme for Marching Band this year, they’ve decided to go another direction. We’ll be pleased with the exhibition on 26 Aug.
PPS: Those of you that know me know that I’m a simple caveman with single-digit IQ, using two-syllable words, & knuckles dragging…very much a simpleton. Some of you have asked why I’m coming back as Band Booster prez. Since Mr. Burke is my host father because I’m on a foreign exchange program, he said he would sponsor me for my green card;)

Che Russell
