HSS Band 2010-11.28 Fruit Truck Wed Dec 8; Concert Dec 9

Happy December, Band Boosters!

Oranges are Coming! Oranges are Coming!
(and grapefruit too!)
Our fruit order is expected to be delivered on Wednesday, December 8 at approximately 2pm. We will need volunteers (students and parents) to help unload the truck. If you can be there, please email Linda Lichtman to let her know; please also provide your cell-phone number so that she can notify you of any last-minute changes (last year, the truck arrived a few hours ahead of schedule; some years the truck has arrived late .... give Linda your cell # if you'd like her to contact you to let you know of any changes). Many hands truly make light labor in this case; so if you can help out it is GREATLY appreciated. Meet by the loading dock on the side of the school facing 7-11 and the bank.

HOW TO PICK UP YOUR FRUIT ORDER:
Wednesday: You'll be able to pick up your fruit soon after the truck is unloaded. Linda has offered to stay for a little while for anyone who wants to come by Wed afternoon to get their order (send her an email if you'd like to connect with her ahead of time).

Thursday: Come before or after the concert ... the concert starts at 7pm; students report at 6pm ... fruit pickup will be from 6pm - 6:45 and then after the concert. IF YOU CAN HELP LINDA WITH FRUIT DISTRIBUTION, please send her an email at

We did order a few extra boxes of fruit, so if you're interested in some last-minute sales, talk to Linda.

DRUMLINE PARENTS MEETING: Dec 7 at 6:30pm
On Tuesday, December 7, at 6:30pm there will be an information meeting for parents of "high school drum line" members (including the few middle-school aged students). The meeting will be a brief information sharing and parent organization session, preparing for the drum line competitive season.

TINY TOTS CONCERT: Friday, December 9 (9:30am)
We'll need a few parent volunteers to help with costumes, etc. for the Tiny Tots Concert on Dec 9 at Hayfield. Send me an email if you can be there to help out.
LOOKING AHEAD: Tiny Tots on the Road ~ Tuesday, December 21 Tiny Tots is taking a road trip to perform at Ft. Belvoir elementary school; we'll need a few parent volunteers to help chaperone/load instruments/etc. If you're interested, send me an email.
DISTRICT BAND AUDITIONS
Good luck to all our students as they reherase and prepare for the All-District Band Auditions coming up on Saturday, December 11. (Details about audition times will be posted online; check the band web site for details as it gets closer.)

Congrats to the football team for AMAZING win over Washington-Lee on Friday! The team will play this Friday, November 26 at Stonebridge in Loudon County in the afternoon. Mr. Burke wants to know how many band students would be able to attend the game: please email him at patrick.burke@fcps.edu to let him know if you (your student) can attend.

Trip Payment Due
Reminder that second payment for spring trip to Orlando was due 11/15/2010: payment of $166; checks made payable to: Hayfield Secondary School

Rehearsal Schedule: check the band web site for info on jazz band; pit orchetra; and drumline

Senior Slide Show:
At the final concert of the year in June, we present a slide show recognizing all our seniors. This year, Mark Sudik has volunteered to create the slide show. We have a LOT of seniors (there were 27 in marching band for instance); so this is a big task (thanks, Mark!). It is not too early to send him photos for the slide show: a 'baby' picture; a 'middle-years' picture; and a senior picture. You can email your digital photos to Mark --or contact him with questions -- at msudik@verizon.net

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday this week! One of the many, many things I'm thankful for are the terrific students, parents, and teachers in the Hayfield band program; thanks for all you do!

Lorraine

HSS Band 2010-11.25 Reminder from Mr. Burke; Senior pictures for end-of-year concert

Dear Band Boosters,

Please see this note from Mr. Burke about attendance for marching band at football game(s):

The marching band will continue to attend the games in support of the football team, and in accordance with the commitment we made at the beginning of the season with regard to grades.

If the football team wins this Friday night, Nov. 19, then the next game will be either Friday, Nov. 26 or Sat. Nov. 27. This will be a volunteer participation game since it is a Holiday weekend. A poll will be taken on Monday, Nov. 22 to gauge attendance for the game. If we get enough members to go, we will go. This game will not affect grades.

I know there are commitments that may conflict with these games. The best policy is to let Mr. Burke know as soon as possible, so something can be worked out.

SENIOR SLIDE SHOW: end-of-year concert

To ALL band members: Wind Ensemble; Symphonic Band; Marching Band; Color guard; etc.

HSS Band 2010-11.24 Home Football Game Friday - report 6:15p

Hi Band Boosters!

Congratulations to the football team for their awesome win over McLean last week! They'll be playing at home tomorrow, Friday the 19th, against Washington & Lee.

I've had some fun feedback about what a great job the band did in the stands last Friday at the game ... and they get the chance to do it again this week. Marching band students should report to the band room by 6:15pm on Friday. No uniforms; dress warmly. The band will perform before the game and in the stands during the game (no halftime show).

We will have just a few items of equipment to take out on the field; we've got two parents lined up to help (thanks Che and Mike A!); and the Dowells have again volunteered to rope off the stands (thanks Bettina and Rob!) ... if any one else can get there early (6:15pm) to help out, please let me know (we could use 1 or 2 more people to get the snacks and water to the field).

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Marching Band Award Dinner last week ... all the food was great; parents - and students - pitched in to help set up, serve, and clean-up; the students did a great job with their presentations; and I was reminded once again how fortunate we are to have Mr. Burke's leadership for the Band program ~ our kids benefit in many ways from participating in band. [NOTE: I have a few spoons and one nice round plastic container - perhaps used for cupcakes? left from the evening --- if you're missing some utensils or plasticware from the dinner, please let me know and I'll return them to you, all nice & clean!]

We're just a few weeks away from our December activities; mark your calendars for these events:

9 HIGH SCHOOL BAND CONCERT -7pm
Fruit Delivery and pick up.
10 Tiny tots Concert (w.e.)10am

11 All District Band Auditions

West Potomac high school
21 Tiny Tots performance at Ft. Belvoir Elementary School

Thanks again for all the great support out there .... you all really put the 'boost' in Band Boosters!!

Humbly serving our kids,

Lorraine

HSS Band 2010-11.23 Orange you glad ... one more chance!

Good Morning Band Boosters!
(I loved getting that extra hour of sleep this weekend; but when the alarm went off at 5:30 this morning, I was wishing for another hour!)

Our Fruit Sale Chair (thanks, Linda!) is giving us all another chance to order fruit: you can bring your order form to the marching band banquet Tuesday night, or send it into school with your band student through Tuesday. Wednesday is the absolute last day to send in orders, as the big order with Florida Citrus Grove must be called in so that we receive the fruit by December 9. Please spread the word to all band students. Remember: each student gets $5 credit on their student account for every box of fruit they sell.

Marching Band Award Banquet is Tuesday:

Marching Band Awards
Tuesday, November 9, 2010

6:00pm

Middle School Lecture Room

Families with last names beginning with the following letters are asked to bring the following:

A-L : a side dish or dessert litre of soft drink.
M-Z : a main dish and a litre of soft drink.

Congratulations to the Football Team for the win against Edison on Friday.
Their win means they'll play at McLean this Friday evening for the District Championship. The marching band will attend the game ... check the band web site for details about transportation, schedule, etc.. The info will be posted as soon as all the details are finalized.
Also check the band web site for rehearsal schedule for Jazz Band which starts this week.
And, a huge thank you to everyone who helped on Friday night .... we have a great group of parents who step up consistently to make things go smoothly. You can be proud of all that you do to help the band students; this program would NOT be the same without your help.
See you on Tuesday evening.
