(2) Parent Coffee - On Wednesday, August 18 (that's TODAY), the band boosters will host a get-together for band parents at 7pm. We'd like this to be a welcome for new parents, and a reunion for veteran parents. If you'd like to help out, please reply to me at bandlsm@gmail.com. We'll meet in one of the classrooms across the hall from the band room. This is an informal get-together where you can learn about some of the 'basics' about the band season; meet other band parents; and have some refreshments.
NOTE: Veteran band parents: I'm putting together a list of comments titled "Things I Wish I Had Known When I My Child Joined Band ...." --- if you have any words of wisdom to share with new band parents, send me an email at bandlsm@gmail.com

(3) Pool Pizza Party - On Thursday, August 26 the band boosters invite all marching band students to come down to Hayfield Pool after rehearsal for pizza and swimming (approx 5p-8pm). Boosters will supply pizza and drinks. We ask families to provide desserts and any fruit, chips, or other side dishes you'd like to share. More details on exact time, etc. will come from Mr. Burke at rehearsals.

(4) Exhibition and pot-luck supper, Friday, August 27. After the second week of marching band, the students will perform an exhibition for us, and then the boosters will host a pot-luck dinner in the cafeteria. At the pot-luck, you'll have the chance to sign up for Tag Day and other volunteer opportunities, pay for marching band shoes, and more. This year, we ask families with last names beginning with A-M to bring a main dish and names N-Z to bring a side dish or dessert to share.

(5) Schedule for fall rehearsals -- Evening marching band practice will be on Tuesdays, 6pm-8pm, and after-school practices will be on Wednesday and Thursday, 2:30pm-4:30pm. Please check the band web site for any updates or changes http://www.hayfieldbands.com/

(7) Tag Day is our biggest fundraiser of the year ~ On two Saturdays in September (Sept 11 and 18 this year), students go door-to-door in the HSS community asking for financial support. Erin Fitzsimmons is looking for someone to help her run the event this year. If you're interested, please contact Erin Dfitzsimmo@aol.com or me bandlsm@gmail.com NOTE - Erin has done a great job organizing and planning this fundraiser; much of the prep is already done. It would be great for someone to 'apprentice' with Erin and learn the ropes so the information can be passed along. This is a great opportunity for someone who is organized; detail-oriented; and who can volunteer time in late August and through mid-September. Please contact Erin or me if you have questions; we look forward to hearing from you!

(8) Volunteer opportunities:
Starting Thursday 8/19, Dottie Andrews (our resident 'Band Mom!') will start measuring kids for their MB uniforms; if you want to help out, come by the band room during band rehearsals Thursday and Friday (5-8pm). We'll also be fitting kids during day rehearsals next week; contact me or Dottie Dorothy.Andrews@fcps.edu if you can help out.
We're also working on cleaning out the band closet and helping with band paperwork. If you're interested or available, contact me and we'll coordinate on the best time to meet.

(9) Band blog --- All band emails are archived at the blog http://www.hayfieldbandboosters.blogspot.com/ --- If you're away from your email, or if you want to refer to past emails to get some info; you can check out the blog. You also can find links to web sites with information on upcoming band events, competitions, and so on.

Finally, if you have any suggestions or questions about band activities, please feel free to get in touch with me. I can be reached by email at bandlsm@gmail.com, and my home phone is 703-719-7358.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I'm looking forward to another great year for Hayfield bands!

HSS Band 2009-10.75 Tri-M banquet; Graduation lunch; Movie project

Dear Band Boosters,
What a great concert last night - kudos to the musicians (and their director!)

Next Tuesday, June 8, please join us for the Tri-M music honor society event. Details will be posted on the band web site.

Graduation Lunch:
On graduation day, Thursday, June 17, band students who are playing at graduation will stay at school after dismissal. Boosters (band, chorus, orchestra) will provide them with lunch. We need some volunteers to help organize the lunch and serve that day. If you would like to help coordinate the food/drinks, and/or if you are able to help out that afternoon, please reply to bandlsm@gmail.com

Introducing a Movie Project: "A Band of Volunteers"
Long-time band parent Che Russell has shared a great idea with us ... he was inspired by a friend's band booster organization who made a video to promote their booster group. You can watch the video at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DfOWKLSz90

At the May Band Booster meeting, the Hayfield Band Boosters decided to make our own video to encourage participation in boosters.

Nick Milton (with his wonderful camera and computer skills!) has volunteered for the project. What we need now are photos -- mainly photos of parents doing band booster things -- they don't need to be photos from only this past year, so if you have photos from band events that you'd like to share, please send them to Nick at nick@innergeekstudio.com.

Also, if you're interested in helping with this project (planning, ideas, music, captions, etc.), please let us know -- the more the merrier! Our goal is to have this finished this summer and ready to unveil at the Parent Coffee held during the first week of Marching Band rehearsal in August.

Many thanks to Che for taking the initiative on this project, and to Nick for volunteering.

Finally, I'd like to thank the parents of all our senior band members --- you ALL will be missed .... each of you has contributed to band, and your help and support have been appreciated. Many thanks to the parents of:

Jordan Barber, Alexander Bring, Mikala Brunson, Megan Burton, Jeremy Center, Lauren Citron, Danielle Cotton, Ryan Cupit, Alex Dubay, Daniel Garcia, Sergio Gonzalez, Samantha Haas, Molly Hall-Harvey, Amanda Hess, Kevin Honorio, Daniel Joseph, Matthew Keeports, Tammy Kiser, Jonathan Larzalere, Elizabeth Lehman, Alyssa Loyola, Marvin Manassa, Stephen Meyer, Mghan Monroney, Nicholoas Moore, Jessica Musman, Samuel Ogbe, Mark Parmley, Rebecca Reed, Andrew Tuck, Laura Wagner and Hannah Williams.

We're going to miss you and your talented students!

Proud to be a band parent,
Lorraine Monaco

HSS Band 2009-10.74 You Did It!!!

Dear Band Boosters,

I'm paraphrasing something I saw on Facebook last night (thanks, Dottie!) ....

The Hayfield Hawks did their finest in 90 degree weather. Played the whole length of the parade. Sounded great!

Many thanks to our terrific band directors, and to the wonderful parents who helped get them outfitted, fed, watered, and watched out for them during the parade.

Hawks parents and kids are the greatest!!!

Hayfield parent, Che Russell, shared this clip from the live coverage of the parade on Military.com (thanks, Che!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVCzlfv6ukM

And Hayfield parent Bettina Dowell got a great shot of the band as they passed the White House (thanks, Bettina!)

We should all be proud of our kids for the hard work they did yesterday, and, mostly, for the mature, cheerful, and talented way they did it.

It was an honor to participate in our nation's celebration of Memorial Day.

Proud to be a band parent,
Lorraine Monaco
