Hi Band Boosters,

Watch Hayfield's It's Academic team compete this morning on NBC4at 10:30am --- Hayfield band members accompanied the team at the taping.

Tonight: Broadway Night, dessert at 7pm; show at 8pm; tickets $10/adult; $7/students and seniors (Choral Dept Fundraiser; Jazz Band performs)

Looking Ahead: Saturday, March 5: Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble perform at Spring Festival - get those tuxes and dresses ready (see schedule and details on the Bulletins page of the band web site.)

HSS Band 2010-11.35 TRIP $ deadline; Message about bill to require PE (Fwd: from FACE)

Hi Band Boosters,

Check the band web site (http://www.hayfieldbands.com/) for rehearsal schedule for drumline; jazz band and wind ensemble this week. The jazz band performs at Broadway Night this coming Saturday, February 19. And congrats to Drumline for their first competition this weekend!

If you're going on the Spring Trip, final payment is due Tuesday, February 15. (Checks made payable to Hayfield Secondary School. Final payment $166 - less any credits from Tag Day and/or Fruit Sales.)

Finally, I'm forwarding some info from the fine arts advocacy group, FACE. As you may know, there are efforts underway to increase the amount of required time for Physical Education in public schools, which would affect time for music and arts as well.

(A great typo in the Washington Post this weekend made it sound like short kids might be exempt: "The Virginia General Assembly is sending a bill to Gov. McDonnell requiring tall children in public school to have 150 minutes of physical activity ...." Pretty sure the bill is for all children .... ! ha ha )

News is starting to spread throughout the Commonwealth and we need to sustain our efforts here to stand a chance of defeating these bills. HB1644 will go to the Senate Public Education Subcommittee on Public Education on Monday.

HB 1644 will come before the SENATE Public Education Subcommittee Monday afternoon, February 14. If it makes it through the committee, as expected, it will then move through the full education committee and then to the floor of the senate. Action is need now to contact your senator and particularly members of the SENATE EDUCATION COMMITTEE.

I have great concerns regarding proposed legislation, HB 1644 which would result in an unfunded mandate that could have long-term financial, facility and scheduling issues for local school divisions.

I am calling your attention to the following issues related to this legislation:

1. While I believe the value of students developing a lifelong enjoyment of physical fitness is essential, my hope would be that physical education programs could assist students in finding ways of maintaining healthy lifestyles that they could sustain. A lifelong commitment to exercise and other ways of meeting those human needs is based on individual choice of physical activities.

2. The proposed legislation for physical education HB 1644, which requires additional minutes of participation in a physical education class, will likely create scheduling issues, a need for additional staff, and would create facilities and equipment requirements which result in significant financial implications for school systems at a time when meeting current needs is challenging.

3. The additional minutes required in HB 1644 could directly impact the ability to meet elementary art and music SOL's and would create substantial scheduling difficulties for those classes, as well as social studies and science.

4. If required in high school, HB 1644 would add 2 additional Carnegie units at the high school level, which in addition to the Economics and Personal Finance course requirement, would result in 3 additional course requirements, and could impinge on the ability of students to prepare for careers, through sequential courses, in preparation for post-secondary study or career pathways, in all advanced elective studies.

5. I recommend that recess, with structured physical education activities, be included in the 150 minute requirement.

6. If school divisions choose to hire additional physical education teachers, a question arises as to the available supply of physical education teachers in Virginia college and university teacher licensure programs.

HSS Band 2010-11.34 THANKS!

Hi Band Boosters,

This was the 21st year that Hayfield hosted the All-district Band Festival .... a 3-day event for 250 students and 35 band directors from the 29 schools that comprise District 10 of the VBODA (Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors' Association).

Thanks to great team-work from Hayfield Families - parents & students - we were able to host another successful event!

I'd like to especially thank Atsuko Russell for the amazing job she did providing hospitality for the band directors. Atsuko worked very hard to make sure the directors were provided with a comfortable place to work or take a break, complete with a steady supply of delicious snacks, hot coffee, cold drinks, and several meals as well (breakfast and lunch). Atsuko upheld Hayfield's reputation for outstanding hospitality.

Special thanks also to Bettina Dowell and Jessica Tyeryar for making trips to Costco to purchase supplies; and Dottie Andrews for her behind-the-scenes help with both hospitality and concessions.

And, it wouldn't have been possible without these parents ....

HSS Band 2010-11.33 HELP Needed ~ Countdown to All District Band Festival

Hi Band Boosters,

The All-District Band Festival is THIS WEEK ..... Thursday evening; Friday; Saturday (concert at 3pm).

We need ALL band parents to consider helping out ... I do know it's tricky because some of it occurs during the school/work day; but any help you can give is appreciated! (I even had a parent from one of the participating schools email and offer to help; so feel free to spread the word.) Whether your child is a beginning band student; symphonic; wind ensemble; jazz band; and/or drumline, you can help us host a successful event for the students and directors from around the region. THANK YOU!

We need help on Friday and Saturday selling snacks and lunch to 250 students; and providing hospitality (breakfast; lunch; snacks) for 35 Band Directors from around the state.

HSS Band 2010-11.32 Help Needed with All-District Band (+Senior Pictures)

Hi Band Boosters,

I hope everyone is enjoying a warm, safe, dry Snow Day!

It's getting time for Hayfield to host the All-District Band Festival ... next weekend, February 3-5.

We need some volunteers to help with concessions, and with hospitality for the 35 directors.

Many thanks to Atsuko Russell who is taking the lead on hospitality. If you'd like to help her with set-up; shopping; serving; or any other aspect of having breakfast; lunch, and snacks available for our guests, please let us know. (setup Thursday afternoon; serve food Friday and Saturday)

We'll also sell snacks and drinks for the 250 students who will be attending; see the Sign-up Genius to pick a slot to come help out. (Students welcome to help after school and/or on Saturday too ... thanks!)

HSS Band 2010-11.31 All District Band Weekend Coming Up in February

Hi Band Boosters, and Happy New Year!

I have to admit I've been adjusting to the New Year a little slowly!

So - here are some things to catch up on:

Wednesday Evening Rehearsals: Wind Ensemble begins Wed.-evening rehearsals this week: 6pm-8pm on Wed until March 16.

Trip Payment: The third payment of $166 is due on January 14. Mr. Burke has posted the credits from Tag Day and Fruit Sales; and I will distribute the list by email as well. (Credits from Tag day and Fruit Sales can be used to adjust the payment amount for the trip.)

And, now, for the Big Item . . .
Hayfield has the opportunity/pleasure/honor of hosting the All District Band Festival again this year, on February 3-5.
This is where students who were selected at auditions held in December come together with guest conductors and rehearse for about 13 hours over two and a half days and then put on an amazing concert. The concert is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, February 5, so mark your calendar now.

As the host school, we provide food and snacks for the students and the directors ~ and this is where we could really use your help. (This message applies to all band boosters: wind ensemble, symphonic, marching band, drumline, etc.)

For the students:
We provide a concession stand for students to buy snacks during their breaks on Friday and Saturday. Additionally, on Saturday, we sell pizza so students who don't leave the school at lunchtime can purchase lunch. Concessions include water, soda, candy, chips, etc. If someone has a Costco membership, we could definitely use your help in purchasing the needed concessions (you'll be reimbursed). We need to fill these positions:
Costco Chief - someone to purchase items from Costco
Snack Czar - someone to be in charge of set-up, signs, etc.
Worker Bees to help staff the concession table and pizza lunch during the day Friday and Saturday (we'll set up 2 or 3-hour shifts through the morning and afternoon - look for a Sign-Up Genius page soon)
Pizza King - to organize the pizza lunch

For the directors:
We do a hospitality suite for all of the directors/staff. This involves breakfast and lunch both Friday and Saturday. Breakfast and lunch volunteers help bring in bagels/doughnuts and coffee/juice on Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as a lunch for about 35 directors/staff members.
WE NEED SOMONE TO TAKE THE LEAD on the hospitality suite. If you're interested, please let me know as soon as possible. (And - thank you!)

Anyone can volunteer: parents, students, relatives, kind strangers! (If any students are looking for service hours, there are shifts after school Friday and on Saturday too.)

If you can help out, please let me know. This is a great opportunity for the Hayfield band community to shine!

HSS Band 2010-11.30 Tiny Tots at Ft. Belvoir next Tuesday the 21st

Dear Band Boosters,

GREAT concert last Thursday evening ~ congrats to all our students ... and Mr. Burke ... for a wonderful performance. If you'd like to order a professional recording of the concert, see the attached form from Ron Art Associates. (And, thanks to Band Dad Che Russell, we also have some links to videos on YouTube .... look for those on the band booster blog later this week.)

The Tiny Tots concert last Friday morning was also a real treat ~ our high-school students put on an entertaining and festive show for the preschool and kindergarten audience! The students were wonderful ambassadors for our school in general, and especially the band program.

And, next week, we get to take Tiny Tots on the road for the first time ever -- Hayfield band has been invited to perform at Ft. Belvoir Elementary School. We will need some parents to help with equipment and costumes. If you are interested in helping load equipment; chaperoning on the bus; or meeting us at Ft. Belvoir elementary, please let me know. (If you plan on driving yourself, please let me know and I can get you instructions for security check and directions to the school/parking/ etc.)

12:36pm - Students report to band room (Students will miss 7th period/ Band Class for Wind Ensemble students)

Truck arrives

Students and parents load truck with equipment and instruments and costumes

1:15pm - Truck leaves for Ft. Belvoir (Has to go to Tulley Gate on Route 1)

1:30pm - Buses with students (with instrument and music) and chaperones leave for Ft. Belvoir (Beulah Rd Gate)

1:45pm - Buses and truck arrive at Belvoir ES; students can help unload truck

2:30pm - Concert

3:30pm - Some band students deliver candy canes to classrooms; some students help load truck; then enjoy pizza & drinks

4:30pm - Truck and buses return to Hayfield (everyone can come back to Hayfield through the Beulah Rd. Gate)

4:45pm - Unload truck/buses; put away instruments and costumes

5:00pm – Dismissed

Don't forget: Tiny tots music, instrument, festive clothing, costume(for characters) , And.....a festive attitude! Please have your child report and leave promptly. If you intend to pick your child from the event, please follow the policy for leaving from an event, found in the band handbook.
